I treated myself to a Shure SM57 and related accessories. I’ve had an AT2020 mic for a long time and it works well, but after a couple open mics, I wanted to try a two mic setup, one for vocals and one for guitar.
Oh cool. I have that mic on my christmas list.
I would like to get a condenser but I am afraid it will pick up all the extraneous noise in my home. The Shure 57 and 58 have been used in the past on so many amazing recording you just can’t go wrong. I am super stoked for you. Please keep us updated on your microphone journey.

Thanks Jason! My 2020 picks up a lot of background sounds. It’s a good mic but needs a controlled environment.
I’ve got SM58s for vocals and have an SM57. It’s amazing how good an acoustic sounds via a mic like the SM57. Did some research recently for a friend who wanted to mic up an acoustic that didn’t have a pick up.
The conclusion I came to was the SM57 was better for live performances because it doesn’t pick up as much background noise as a condensor mic whereas a condensor mic was considered better for the home studio where one presumably has more control over the background noise.
I like it, Ashu, like Tony above, I have an SM58, it’s a cool mic, I’m just getting the hang of it cheers HEC
Thanks HEC! Good to hear more feedback!
Yeah, Ashu, I haven’t used it much because I have been too busy. I need to slow down, I think, and start to get more involved ![]()
