Not sure where to ask this - looking for free video editor suggestions

Moderators - Please move if this is not the appropriate place for this post, Thank you.

I’ve heard here, somewhere can’t recall, that Divinci Resolve is a free editor, but that doesn’t seem to be true. It has a very limited 60 second length restriction.

Are there any decent editors without length restrictions, or do I just need to pony up some cash?

What operating system are you using?

Assming this is for recording of your guitar work, but if you have more details, that may help suggest features you will want to use and then folks can steer you toward tools that have them.

I tend to record on MacOS. So far, I simply have used QuickTime. It is very basic and comes with the OS.

Not quite true. The free version is limited to a create and export framerate of 60fps. That is fine for AVoYP being posted on Youtube. The Frame Rate defines how many still images (frames) are shown per second, creating motion.

Laptop PC with windows 11 primarily.
Thank you good suggestion

So it’s a misuse on my part?
I can get more than 60 seconds by changing fps setting your saying?
I’ll just have to find the setting?

Why would you need to change the setting? It is suffice for editing a recording you playing a song for example. The setting does not limit the duration of the recording that can be edited to 60s. It just limits the number of images shown per second.

I realized I offered my capture software, not the editor. I generally move my captures into shotcut on a linux machine. Here is what google search came up with for windows:

Resolve looks very fancy. Shotcut gets the job done, but the UI is not obvious to me and I need to seach for instructions often.

Hmm seemed to limit the duration to 60 seconds. In fact when I hit the export bit or gives me 2 options.
Download w 60 sec limit or buy full version.
I’m thinking I don’t
Truly have Divinci Resolve. It’s Movia (or something like that I’m not near my PC now).

If you have MacOS, you also get iMovie free which is pretty powerful.

I started using the free version of Davinci Resolve last year and never encountered any time limitation and in fact used to edit one of the JGC OMs that ran well over an hour. I have also used Windows Movie Maker that used to be freeware but became chargeable on Win 10. Its is easier to use than Davinci that has a steeper learning curve but the latter is the better product. The 60fps has not been an issue as most of my videos have been recording at 30fps and the quality has not suffered.

For basic editing clip cut shut post, I have also edited the Forum OMs in Reaper. A feature most DAW will support, which may be all you need for self recording. ie KISS.

Problem resolved. I let my browser and movavi fool me into thinking I was downloading Divinci Resolve when in fact I downloaded Movavi which contains the 60 second restriction. Of course I didn’t know this until I spent the time studying the app. All for nothing. I hope Divinci Resolve is as user friendly, having to do this again.

Sometimes I use OpenShot as my video editor because the software I paid for (Magix Movie Studio Platinum) doesn’t do what I need. I find it simple, intuitive, and it does most basic things. I actually bought Sony Vegas Platinum many, many years ago and it stopped working. I was forced to upgrade, and it was bought by Magix some time ago. I started using OpenShot because the “upgrade” couldn’t do some things that the old Vegas could, frustratingly enough.

If I do my capture well, though (I use OBS), then I don’t always need to put the video through an editor program.

I have recently been using Shotcut and rather like it. It has a bit of a learning curve, but not too bad. The price is certainly right.

Sounds like you have it sorted Mike, but anyway, I too am using Resolve and finding it powerful but not too hard to get around.

Good luck.

@MiJoy I use ShotCut on Windows 11. It does the job with no limitations or adverts and it’s free.

I use KDEnlive on Linux. But it’s also available on other platforms.

Cheers,

Keith

Like @Majik , I also use KDEnlive. But I use it on Windows. Works great. It’s free and open source.

I use kdenlive. It’s aight. I remember having some problem or other with shotcut that led to me using kdenlive, but I don’t remember what the problem was. It may have been with importing certain kinds of video
