Hi All,
I’m trying to up my game on my video and audio recordings of me playing…
After some investigation, OBS Software seem the easiest way to go to record audio and video at the same time…
Current setup:
Spark 2 Amp
Webcam
Android Phone
Laptop
I installed the OBS software and setup both my Webcam and Android phone so I can have two screens of me playing from different angles, that works great.
Connected from my Spark 2 amp via the two Line Out ports to the USB-C port on my laptop
(see photo)
Everything works great, I can hear the guitar, backing track etc so no problems…until I plug my headphones in…(want to hear the backing track in my headphones while I’m playing)
I first plugged my headphones into my laptop and then into the Spark Amp and all I can hear is the backing track in the recordings. I played the backing track on the laptop and then I played it via the Spark Amp and same problem…
Does anyone know a work around this?
Do I have to get for e.g. a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Studio Gen 4 and then plug the Line Out cables from Spark into the Line in on the Scarlett (I know I would have to get new cables) and the headphones also into the Scarlett? Would that work?
Any suggestions would be grateful. It all works perfectly without the headphones, just when I plug the headphones in. Is there a setting maybe in OBS audio settings, I did have a look and changed it to the Spark when it was playing both BT and guitar thru it but still same problem.
I know this is not a deal breaker but it would be nice to have, especially when I’m practising or doing videos at night and I don’t want to upset my neighbours LOL
Maybe I missed something, but I don’t see a need for the 2i2. What I do is just the USB on the amp to capture the guitar. In my case, if I want to capture the backing track, I need to either copy the track in and then align timing, or capture the additional “through” track which is part of my USB channels. In your case, you have two USB out, so you want to see if the backing track will show up on one of those channels. Options I have (on 8 channels) are: wet guitar, dry guitar, backing track and guitar mixed, second wet guitar, second dry guitar, and some selectable stuff I don’t fiddle with. See if your Spark has the 2 output channels defined in the user manual for you.
One other way to do it if the backing track is not on the USB channels, depending on OBS, is to play it back thru OBS into the Spark (you have a single input channel on USB) and then let OBS know of the latency so it can adjust your recorded track to the right place a little more automatically. This is often my method on my Helix using Waveform.
Hope that is clear.
Another thing you might try, instead of using the line out ports, you might try the USB out port of spark … then in Windows > Sound > Recording input, enable the spark and use that. The OBS audio mixer should then show it as an input.
Hi All,
After having a fun day of trial and error and setting up the OBS software, I’ve got it all working…
Used @AndyIndy (Andy’s) suggestion, used the USB from Spark to Laptop, that now works perfectly.
So, I can do the following now:
Do video recording from both Webcam and Mobile simultaneously and have two different angles of my guitar playing (really professional LMAO) or just use one, depending on requirements.
Have the Spark sound go to software - See above (per Andy)
Can play a backing track via Guitar Pro or from my laptop into software.
Can use my headphones on my laptop while listening to a backing track etc. and the software will still pick it up.
All of this is done simultaneously via the OBS software, so no need for editing or splicing etc. it keeps it all in sync.
The only things I cannot do it is use the headphones on the Spark amp because Spark automatically switches off the speaker when using headphones, which is fine. Also I can play the backing track through the Spark but cannot get it recorded, only the guitar (I’ll have a look into that, not a issue at the moment)
Just waiting on my gooseneck desk stands for my mobile and webcam, set those up and all ready to start doing some recording…
So overall, I’m happy, the software seems relatively easy to use and for been free, you cannot go wrong.
Best part, didn’t have to spend loads of money on audio interfaces and cables etc., just the two stands (mobile and webcam) and better headphones, which I needed anyway. So a win win.
Thanks for the comments and help
Expect some new videos soon
