Here’s a quick 2 chorus original Funk Rock Blues jam.
Playing both rhythm and lead over a drum track.
For BLIMmmers, ( and others of course), I’m using 7ths for the I, 9ths for the IV and V, and introducing the Major 6th - which is a very cool ‘open’ sound in the Blues - on the turnaround. Some sliding into chords, step ups/downs etc.
The lead, fills, etc are not any particular licks; they just come out of arpeggios type shapes as to what sounded good. Not perfect, but on my way.
Good rhythm, great lead playing, I love your blues jam. The sound of your guitar and the quality of recording (loud and clear) is worth mentioning, too
Very nice!
Very cool jam, Shane. What in particular makes you add the word ‘funk’ into the title? Sounded like a blend of blues and rock n roll to me? A little bit SRV-esque in some moments? Not at all important, it sounded great which is all that matters.
Thanks for the listen and kind words David. Yes, definitely has an SRV groove to it. Interesting you say that, as I’m currently revisiting Mary Had A Liitle Lamb, so some possible unconscious crossover there.
Funk? Syncopated type rhythm, accent on the 2 and 4, use of various 7th,9th voicings, plus a ‘funky groove’ overall.
Shane, Just had a listen to this which sound real good, although I haven’t a clue what most of the below means! It looks like English but don’t understand it.
Thanks for the listen Stuart.
It all sounds more technical in the written form than it really is. Once you get the basics down, its pretty logical; then its just time and practice in order to play it.
Thanks Shane, always appreciate you indulging my random questions. Especially when I am slipping into one of my common modes viz ‘David, the over-thinker’. I probably wouldn’t have had the thought if the title had been ‘funky rock blues jam’ (there ‘David, the pedant’ surfaces). Also my sense of funk rhythms is probably limited and wondered when I didn’t hear the kind of syncopated rhythm that I associated with funk. But as I said, all quite unimportant.
Can’t wait to hear you jam MHALL. The way you play, your knowledge, really an inspiration that shows what can be achieved by a mere mortal (mean that in the nicest possible way) with determination and dedication, persistence and patience. This comes to mind when I remember your first recordings when you first came to JG and consider the guitarist you have become.
I’m loving that, Shane! Right in the groove, I listened through 3 times and I still want more. Your playing is darn impressive, BLIM is sure serving you well!
Your groove and feeling was just great, effortless switching between rhythm and lead and a kind of “freshness” to the overall sound. Really impressive skills here and loads of musicality! You’ve come a long way already and it’s always a pleasure to listen to you.
