Hi Dave, thanks for your welcome. I’m also thinking about a smaller and thinner acoustic, I still like the sound. I am only at module 5 and began shortly following his theory course wich is very interesting. It’s not free from module three but it’s inexpensive, I am now at module 4 from this course
I never heard of the brand Mitchell, I’m curious if you like this one more. Sometimes I still take the dreadnought but it is barely unplayable for me…
And I’m glad you enjoy the ride, I do also!
Howdy, I’m Josh from NYC. I bought a guitar 2 years ago, tried learning but was way too hard on myself, so I stopped until 2 weeks ago. So, at 49 years old, I’m trying again with a much more relaxed attitude which has made all the difference. I’m using Justin’s beginner app and just moved from Module 1 to Module 2 earlier today. I’m very happy I’m giving this another go.
Hi
I’m David and I’m 68. I started trying to play the guitar back in February this year. I vaguely remember trying a guitar in my teens and giving up after my handiwandies hurt too much I’ve been dipping in and out of Justin’s excellent courses and have been practicing pretty much every day since starting.
Started with an Ashton dreadnought that I’d bought back in 2005 and never tried since, then bought a better quality Ibanez dreadnought. Hearing that an electric might be easier I bought a Strat, and it is indeed easier.
However, I still like the sound of an acoustic, but found the dreadnought a bit big and bulky, particularly after practicing on the Strat. So I’ve added PRS SE P20 parlour guitar, and that is much easier to play.
I’m still a bit rubbish, but I am finding that stuff that seemed impossible at the start now doesn’t seem quite as hard, so there’s some progress. I can see that this journey is measured in years, not months. Slightly arthritic thumbs don’t help.
Currently stuck on barre chords. I find I can play them OK, but it takes me too long to form the chord within a song and there’s a horrible delay.
Also messing with scales on the electric, but finding it hard going. Power chords are fun but annoy the wife, particularly with the amp cranked up.
Having started I’ll definitely be continuing but not expecting to be putting on a concert any time soon
Welcome Dave!
It looks as though you’ve already been bitten by the GAS (guitar acquisition syndrome) bug! You’re absolutely right about the timeline, enjoy the journey
Good to see you Dave. Nice collection, nowt wrong with GAS.
This thread title certainly needs a re-badge.

Thanks guys
Yes I definitely got GAS
Hello David and welcome to our community.
The barre chords will come eventually. It is a slow process and takes lots of practice but in the end it is all worth it.
Welcome Dave,
and enjoy your journey, there are quite a few fellow travellers that are in the over 60 category here. Your concert may come sooner than you now think

Hi all,
I started playing guitar off and on over the years, but decided to start playing and stick with it for real now in my 50’s. I have a decent 6 string Yamaha acoustic guitar and Taylor electric acoustic. I’m surrounded by supportive family and a great local music community.
It’s good to see that I’m not alone in this endeavor later in life.
Welcome, Carolyn! Yes, you’re in good company here.
Hi Carolyn,
Welcome, all preconditions in your situation have been met, … you just have to persevere yourself, … I wish you a lot of fun
Greetings,Rogier
Hello Carolyn and welcome to our community.
It sounds like you’ve got it all covered. Enjoy your journey.
No, there are quite a few of us here.
I started 5 days ago and my fingers are painful.( LH 65 yr old) I am trying to do several 5 minute practises a day instead of one long one. I can play the 2 chords A and D clean and changes around 20-25 pm. Do you think I should stay on this first module a while longer yet until i can up the change rate ? Its getting a wee bit boring doing the same thing all day.
I think you are doing great! While you’ll want to continue to up the change rate over time, I think its fine to move ahead and start learning some new things. Most importantly you want to enjoy yourself and not get bored. Another chord will up a number of songs, and that’s where the fun is
I’d move to the next lesson. It’s the E chord and will give you the option of trying song once you changes are up to around 40 changes a minute.
-just timed myself today and managed 36 clean (ish) Onto the next then.
Hello Tom and welcome aboard.
The finger pain will soon be a distant memory. Remember that it needs to be fun. If you start to find it a bit stale, move on but keep working on what you think needs work.
I’m so glad I found this thread. Sorry to say that I have been neglecting my guitar just lately, he will have forgotten who I am. I seem to have lost my way a little and needed some motivation, glad to see there are others in the same boat. I am sure with Christmas on the horizon it will give some a little kick where it is needed as this is a lovely time of year to be playing some basic carols. Keep going peeps x
