Older guitar students - can 'old dogs' learn new tricks?

Hi from an Australian expat living in Bangkok. I’m 69 in may this year, I’ve had 3 attempts to learn guitar, none of them serious. This time, it’s great because there are so many different places that teach online. I stumbled on Justin’s guitar lessons from watching fellow guitar learners on YouTube and I’m loving it. I’ve got a Yamaha c40 nylon strings acoustic with a nut width of 50mm, I bought a steel string acoustic and tried to get my fingers into a 43mm nut width and sent it straight back. I’m a retired military aircraft “black hander” mechanic and have those type of fingers, not long and sleek. I’ll learn a bit more on my Yamaha and then get a BATON ROUGE 46mm nut width or wider if I can find one. I’m a “slowly slowly” person, I’m also a very tragic golfer of over 40 years and I am enjoying learning at my own pace. Cheers. Phil

And that’s what you need for this bunch of fun and games. Those that run often trip and full. Take your time. And welcome to the forum. :sunglasses:

Coming up on 2/3 of a century in a 1/2 year --is that a middle aged dog, or have I sidled up to to old, not in heart (can you tell I like numbers)?

Been following JG, slowly, since Aug 2024, about to graduate myself from grade one. I just stumbled into this group of folks. Totally new to guitar. Went through the painful fingertips and out the other side [ though, no one warned me that touch electronics are not inclined to respond when I touch with my fretting fingers ]

My dream is to be able to play well, and to sing passably well enough, that others will join in. Semi retirement (and it not being gardening season, kids are adults and out of house). I’ve already developed GAS like symptoms…

Music is a big part of midcoast Maine (USA) social life. Lot’s of cèilidhs in the area (I had to look up how to spell that gaelic word) and I’d like to be able to join our community of shared music making and appreciation. Someday, maybe–in a year or two add be contributing to the beautiful sound?

Just started my “song book”. Going the electronic (via Songbook Chordpro) route so it scrolls. I’m struggling enough that chord progressions all seem jumble into a heap with seemingly random order being produced from memory.

I love the chord and lyrics together and having it scroll–very helpful (assuredly keeping me lazy about fully learning as well). I find it like the play-along on the JustinApp. Keeps me on beat, I can link to the songs in the library so I can practice to the songs that are too expensive for JustinApp to include.

What did the tree say when it left the mill?
Glad to be a board

If you’re looking for old dogs, at 68, I definitely fit the bill. When I took up the guitar at 62, I didn’t even know how to hold it. I felt I was never EVER going to learn the fretboard, and I was always hearing voices, real and imagined, that I should give up as I had no “talent.” I didn’t give up though. As for learning the fretboard, Justin’s app was my most important tool!

Been a while since I dipped in here and said hello to the new members of the pound.
Great to see so many folks signing up and willing to learning new tricks.

All I can say is welcome and my age old saying to those who think they qualify, shoot age is just a number its how you feel, but as a certain Mr Anderson of Jethro Tull once sung

You are never too old to rock n roll.

Welcome peeps !

And if you remember the original, you actually have a right to be consider an old dog.

Hi all, oh my goodness looks like a can of worms opened up here! It’s very, truly lovely to meet you all.
I started learning classical guitar aged 14 back in the days when you could only tune a guitar with a tuning fork! That probably helped my ears develop I guess. My tutor had a good ruler - the thwack was resonant!!
I gave up guitar when I discovered boys and dates
Picked it up occasionally but was not developing, only playing stuff I already knew.
Fast forward about 30 years and my kids bought me an acoustic guitar. It looked really good in the corner.
Fast forward another 20 or so years (is anyone counting?) and I pick up the guitar again. I found Justin and I keep going. Problem now is that I cannot remember what I learn unless I keep playing it. It’s the journey that counts. I decided to learn the blues so started BLIM 1 promptly had back problems and could barely lift a guitar. Joined BLIM 2 and it’s a bit better except I’ve had an ankle fused which was more time out.
Anyways, lest you’re bored I’m late 60’s a grandmother to 7 darlings and love playing guitar - electric now. I have a beautiful PRS and love it.
Keep smiling folks and never give up.

Just old…if you post here you are old…and face it…the people who say age is just a number are old too
Welcome here BC @mundeli ,but of course be proud of the years you have achieved…and I wish you a lot of fun :sunglasses: :guide_dog:

Hi James @JamesSuntres Welcome here and I wish you a lot of fun :sunglasses:
Thanks to Justin I have now come as far as where I am in a relatively short time… I really doubt ( well I’m pretty sure not ) whether I would have had as much fun learning without this site, and being old makes learning a bit slower but so much more fun here with a quieter life now  :sunglasses:

Welcome, Lin.

I, alas, did not have access to guitars when I was young so did not have a chance to use a tuning fork. But I do remember pitch pipes in my music classes in school

Aren’t they wonderful to behold!

Hello Lin! I am another late 6o’s old fart who stopped playing for 25 years. Found Justin and, like you, have kept going. I also have a PRS that I love, and a Taylor Baby acoustic. Such fun and inner satisfaction!
