Older guitar students - can 'old dogs' learn new tricks?

Yes ,we too … but Kssst  kssssttt go go you puppy …40 years " old "dog ???

:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: Welcome here Eric ,

Of course I don’t decide on that, if you think you’re 40 years and old, you belong here ,or 70 years young too  . The only thing that matters is that you have to have fun in playing/learning the guitar here…

So I wish you alot of fun here :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Ps: you did the best gift you could give yourself :grinning_face_with_big_eyes:

Hi Eric, welcome to the community and to the “old” dogs kennel. I’m 70 years young and still learning. At just 40 years old , you will have a lot of years of enjoyment ahead of you for your guitar journey.

Hello Eric, welcome to JustinGuitar, this wonderful community, and the old dogs kennel. I allocated you a spot in a freshly cleaned space just over → there with some of the other new arrivals. We’re happy waggy-tailed and ready to play around here! woof woof

Hello Eric @RickRigs & Welcome!!!

At 40 years old, I’m not sure if you are really an ‘Old Dog’… but we’ll let you howl along with the rest of the pack anyway!!! Besides, we’re all just as old as we feel & I usually feel about 40 unless I’ve overdone the yard work or something similar!!!
Have fun learning guitar, you have found the right site to get started!

I’ve spent the last few days doing more physical stuff than I’m used to, home maintenance jobs, painting etc and moving furniture around. I’m 60 feeling 80! My lower back is complaining for sure haha.

Hi, there. Another “old dog” just tapping in. My name is Carroll and I’m 68, joining JG (and this particular kennel) after almost three decades of fits and starts. As I mentioned in an “introduce yourself” post, I retired a year and half ago and decided to get serious and even though I had lessons at some time in the past, mostly scraped away self-taught. Basic open chords are still in the memory banks, but picked up JG’s lessons from square one to get the technique I missed and break many bad habits. Still in G1 and already learned a lot. Hoping to learn more from my fellow “geezers”.

Cheers

Hi Carrol

Apologies for my delayed welcme, I am one of the old dogs that have been hiding in the JG BLIM3 kennel.

I am 67 and had a 20 year hiatus from guitar, and got going again Sep 2024. I followed Justin’s grade 1-3 courses quite closely and used the practice routines pretty much, some stuff came back quickly, some not. Look at me know posting videos on JG and learning the Blues.

Justin’s courses are very good and help most on there guitar journey, but you have the support of lots of other friendly guitarists at differing levels here. So if you’re stuck or don’t understand just ask.

Have lots of fun on your guitar journey.:guitar::sign_of_the_horns::slightly_smiling_face:

Sounds like my kind of club. I played guitar in my teenage years, mainly folk stuff, but children and work intervened for many decades! Retirement has brought opportunities to make up for lost time and although I still play folk material I have been trying to develop my jazz playing - chord melody especially.

Thanks Tod. I find that even in retirement life can get in the way of practice but I try and devote 45 minutes of my evenings and I think it’s important to have a routine.

My biggest problem at 82 is that I am continuously learning “new tricks” & can’t seem to be satisfied enough with my progress on the songs I play. My strumming sucks, so I’m basically a fingerpicker & I can play a lot of the songs in my generation but can’t make myself stop learning long enough to settle on what’s working; there’s always one more rung up the ladder. If I were younger, that would be a great thing, at this age I need to find a happy medium, any suggestions?

There are guitar gloves on Amazon that work great. Your fingers develop callouses minus the pain. Tried & true, I used them 2 years ago. > https://www.amazon.com/s?k=guitar+gloves&crid=3Q8DCSK1K14E&sprefix=guitar+gloves,aps,140&ref=nb_sb_ss_p13n-expert-pd-ops-ranker_1_13 Maybe this link will work, maybe not. Good luck!

You probably should have directed that at @bill2009 . I don’t have a problem with finger pain. I don’t need gloves.
