It’s by achieving hard things that you gain the most satisfaction.
When he said 30 changes in a minute I laughed out loud. I was struggling to remember where to put each finger. But I tried anyway. 31 changes right at the buzzer! Thanks Justin! I no longer want to give up! Now to aim for 60…
31 changes at the buzzer too! It’s the finger pain that’s getting me right now
. But I’m having fun and that’s what matters
Nice one Harvir ![]()

Hey! Super awesome lesson! So the first time I did it I got to 27, and I just did it now for the second time and I got 26. Thanks so much for the lesson! It was super helpful!
So I’ve reset all my progress as I want to start again. I know all the open chords although not managed to perfect them so going back to the start to try and be able to work on them one at a time. I’m on the A and D chord chord change exercise. I can change them on the strum on the one-beat although need to work more on getting them to sound good every time.
On the bottom it says
Before you move on to the next lesson, try to get up to 30 chord changes per minute between D and A chords.
Does it actually mean module rather than lesson?
Hi Ari, I think Justin actually means “lesson” here. The last lesson in Module 1 is “When to move on from Module 1?”. ![]()
I’m trying to do it. but My fingers are really painful now and i feel like I’m getting blisters. I’m too slow and can’t keep going after two or three minutes. And the last String is always a problem. ![]()
Oh, really? I can bearly reach 12
Hi Pedram. 2 mins is too long. You should do this excersize only 1 minute a day during your practice. You total changes will increase progressively as you continue your practices. By the end of week 2 you will notice a much high number of changes. You definitely do not want to hurt yourself. Keep it fun.![]()
This is ok. It will go up. Keep up the good work. ![]()
Edit Consistency over time is the key.
Sshouldn’t I reach 30 before I move to the next lesson? with one minute per day it would be impossible. Im currently doing that as much as i can.
No move on and watch other videos and incorporate those things into your practice as well. Then you will have a nice set of practice excersizes in your daily routine also. You can start adding things amd pre watching videos, re watching for additional tips you may habe missed as you see fit.
I always start with my daily practice routine and do alll my excersizes. Then I go and do videos. Some maybe new, same are review and old. I look at songs also review old songs. Then if I feel strong I go back and redo some of my practice routine excersizes if i want to push the extra.
But yeah I tend to push ahead. Not everyone does and thats totally ok. Sometimes I don’t and I stay in one place for a while also and work heavy on songs.
Edit just dont get too far ahead. Stay with in the module of course. Other people may have other good advice also.
Hi @Pedram , there’s a reason it’s called “one minute changes exercise” - you’re supposed to do it for 1 minute. Your fingers (skin, tendons, muscles) have to get used to doing something completely new. If you don’t want to hurt yourself, you have to build it up slowly. Overdoing it might in the end force you to put the guitar aside for some time, so that won’t help you.
Have you finished all the videos for module 1? And are you using the practice routine Justin has created, covering all things you learn in this module? If not, do it. The idea is not to practice one thing over and over again until you master it, but to mix up a series of exercises allowing you to learn different things at the same time, while also varying the ‘load’ on your skin, tendons and muscles so as to give them time to adapt. Besides, variation is what keeps things interesting and thus motivating. If you just practice the same thing over and over, chances are you will lose your motivation, and that would be a real shame.
The exercise routine for module 1 is 20 min. If you want to practice more, you could do this routine twice a day, but make sure to leave a couple of hours between the two sessions to allow your fingers to rest. Playing guitar doesn’t seem to be all that taxing for your hands and arms, but don’t be fooled: it is.
Apart from the health reasons for keeping practice sessions relatively short, is the simple fact that there’s only so much your brain can manage in a day. Repeated short sessions, with a decent pause in between, are far more effective than one long session.
Thanks for advice. You are right. I will watch other videos in the module too.
I wanted to get perfect and then move forward, but that is not the right approach.
Hi @LadyOfTheCastle , I’m already having Blisters. I watched just a Video on Youtube and the Guitarist was playing with no effort. I’m looking at my guitar to find the right String the whole Time.
I havn’t finished all the videos yet, and I haven’t used any practice routin either. I visited " My Practice Assistant" Page but I don’t know yet how it works. I will watch the video “Module 1 Practice Routine” and then it will be probably not that difficult.
Thank you!
Good exercise.
During the first timed minute, to my own surprise, I managed 19 changes!
During the second, third, fourth, and fifth attempts, I lost count each time and had to start over.
By focusing on both fingering and counting, my fingers were all over the place, but never where they needed to be. ![]()
We have a long way to go, but we’re going for it.
This really pays off. Keep up the good work.

I’m up to 40 ish with A and E. 30 ish with C and A, 20 ish with E and D I think. Slowly getting better
It would be useful to have the ‘A’ and ‘D’ chord diagrams in the “Learn More” section below the video so I can make sure I’m placing my fingers correctly, I have not committed them to memory yet at this point
