Open Mic 20 : Recording & After-Show Chat

Surely there are some parts that could be edited out?!?? Wouldn’t want it going to long after all. :flushed:

I literally had a request to please leave in your long intro as people found it fascinating! If you want it edited out I can do that though, just let me know now and I’ll cut it before upload. :grinning:

I was thinking of having an extra timestamp for the start of your actual song though so people could go straight to it.

Hah - ok. Let’s leave it in. I’m looking forward to seeing if it was as bad as it was in my mind.
So frustrating! And not the first time it’s happened. I’m still learning the technology and ‘setup’ - and there are stumbles along the way. All part of the journey.

It was really interesting given you do pretty complicated loop setups and we’re all guitarists here. I find it hard enough to lay down a single layer loop, let alone what you do.

My first one as a spectator. Was a bit late because of the wrong timezone I gave :upside_down_face:

It was amazing seeing everyone’s amazing contributions. Very inspiring.

For the people that use more than a microphone for an input, what software do you use to send multiple inputs through the zoom call? Is it Voice Meter or something different?

Lots of different options @razshaw. A good place to start is here: Open Mic Tech Talk - What you need to get started as a performer v2. A lot of the gear is the same as used for recording (audio interface & DAW).

There’s a whole category on tech setup options: Tech Talk - How to setup Zoom / Audio / Video - JustinGuitar Community

Well done JK can’t wait to have a look. 0330 is generally too damn early for me :scream: or late,

Hey everyone, here is the recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uJKWQ3yfUk

@DavidP @Richard_close2u @TheMadman_tobyjenner if one of you could please add it to the header post?

@liaty @dobleA @TheMadman_tobyjenner I didn’t catch the name of your songs in the recording, let me know and I’ll add it to the Youtube description.

Sympathy for the Devil by The Rolling Stones.

I’ll add the link when I get to the pc, as just surfacing.
That sure was a quick turnaround, thanks JK.

Ok, on second thought - edit those twelve false starts out  :flushed:
Thanks for putting this together JK. appreciate your work!

Goodness gracious me, Toby created the Topic and JK dropped the recording in as a reply already, you guys sure are in a rush  @jkahn please can you also include the link to the chat file and then Toby and I will race to see who gets to edit it into the Topic First Post

As for not recognising SftD, JK, I’ll give you a pass based on age and the Stones not having the same general mass appeal of the Beatles  But seriously, it’s the Beggars Banquet album opener. I’m unashamedly a lover of the Stones, especially the albums from their great run of 4 from '68-'72 (their greatest hits compilations aren’t too bad), but would advocate those 4 are worth a listen at least once, which you may or may not enjoy.

Is it too quick? It’s been hours since the OM… I just emailed you the chat log, I always forget about that  and can’t upload it direct to the community.

Thanks updated it. And @DavidP - the Stones were well before my time, I know a couple of their songs from hearing them in movies or ads but really don’t know a lot of it! Or have the inclination to dig deeper, they don’t really do it for me.

No worries, I was just having a Sunday morning laugh. All good.

Chat sorted, thanks

Fair enough. I feel similar about subsequent generations … Grunge, Brit Pop … I find a lot of what folk here rave about to be nothing special.

Every now and then, I’ll listen to Robert Johnson, Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian and the like. Will be interesting to see what from the second half of the 20th century stands the test of time and gets some attention in another 20-30 years.

All good. Fun to talk about and dip into for a listen now and then.

Wow @jkahn , that is quick, thank you for the editing. Thanks also to @TheMadman_tobyjenner
, @nzmetal and @brianlarsen for everything you did last night. It was a good show and we were pleased to be part of it. Good job also to all the performers. :star_struck: :star_struck:

Thanks for dropping the video link into the header, was on the mobile earlier ! I see the chat is also there as well now.

May have sussed my missing decibels but more on that after I’ve reviewed the recording.

As to the song name, I’d be hard pressed to recognise songs for JKs youth, so quite natural for the song to be unknown from 20 years earlier.

At the end of the day you like what you like.

Anyway, collective good work to get the show out to our viewers.

Post Match Analysis

Where have all the decibels gone…queue song !!

OK so don’t do this at home for starters.

So before hitting Echo Cancellation during the run up to the show, as Jeff was getting a signal bounce, I dropped the AIs Main Mix from around -2db to what you see above. Once EC had resolved the issue I never returned the sliders to their starting position. Which explains huge volume drop. And I have a horrible feeling I left the 2 guitar channels muted, in my excitement to get going, as I cannot hear any FX. Its the mic picking up the guitar.

You’d have thought I’d have the hang of this by now. But nooo, classic school boy errors. Thank goodness I got a final dry run saved before the show, though the ending was stuffed up.

Hey ho, onwards and upwards.

I think you are right Toby. That guitar is so soft it seems quite plausible that we are hearing it through the dynamic.

The more moving parts, the more likely one is to end up with a snafu on the night.

Perhaps at a point it becomes sensible to write up a checklist. Then run a pre-performance check, like a pilot doing pre-flight checks, before launching into the song.

I’ll be sure to give that a spin.

Congratulations, tip the hat, to all the performers, the one and only Brian, Zoom maester Jeff, and Toby for all the pre-and-post efforts (which may now be simplified, but still have to be done).

Last night my local reception was terrible. I was on my laptop via WiFi but sure I have done it before and been OK. So I just listened through the entire show again to hear it properly.

What a treat, start to finish, something special about each and every performance.

Bravo.

And that checklist would have had Echo Cancellation off, as I usual use cans or IEDs !!
First time using the monitors, so lesson learnt for the future. I’ll drop the Diary Footnote later today once folk get a chance to see the show, which I plan to do now.
