Open Mic 30 Recording & After-Show Chat

Big thank yous to @DavidP and @TheMadman_tobyjenner for their hard work in organizing the event.

Apologies to all who attended live and couldn’t hear the backing track that I was hearing in my headphones. No idea how that could have happened. We’ve mixed it back in for this recording, so it makes a bit more sense, and makes the second chorus of the second solo which I messed up not sound quite so bad

Congratulations to @Boris1565 on a stellar “Thrill is Gone” debut! Don’t sweat @domi7 next time, life events won’t get in the way.

Got to say, it sounded pretty awesome without the backing track, but the “inside Phil’s head” version is even better!

Yes, fabulous debut from @Boris1565

Got to say @domi7, given all the stuff you had to contend with up to the performance (including not being able to soundcheck) you were a braver man than me just to give it a go! We’ve all been there, and I look forward to the next one

I thought I had got in and out unnoticed.
Ah well.
I had hoped to catch a few of the later performers but it was all over.
I thought it rude to burst in on the chat when I hadn’t been present beforehand so took my leave.

I have watched through to Phil’s performance so far.
Thrills and spills galore.
It was great to see you make debut @Boris1565 … I know you from both BLIM courses and I know you have posted in the wider community too. Perhaps others don’t know you. Maybe you could tell a little of your JG story in this topic?

I don’t know what goes on in Phil’s head but it must be good!!

Congrats to @mathsjunky @domi7 @Malz @ElleDeeGee @Eccleshall @twistor59 so far

All enjoyable and different.

I shall continue and return.

Hi Boris, I don’t quite understand Richard … you’ve been here for 4 and a half years, 850+ posts, :grinning_face_with_big_eyes: :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:feel free to tell your whole story, maybe I’m missing something Richard? just curious

Greetings

My comments are only due to Boris making debut at the Open Mic and on such previous occasions the debuatantes have been encouraged to tell the audience a brief summary about their guitar learning story.
It is no criticism of any kind.
I’m just aware that for all Boris has been here for a while, some Open Mic audience folk may not have ‘met him’ previously.

I missed a few of these OMs, so I listened to them in a sometimes slightly accelerated version (although I listened to a whole song of each one) and I must say that I was quite pleasantly surprised…
@mathsjunky Paul super nice approach to this classic and gives me an inspiration to try something similar, even though I don’t have as nice a voice as you, so have to find a go arround of that … raelly like it :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

@domi7 Dominique ,Nice to see you :grinning_face_with_big_eyes: doing this so since your adventures with Allison are audio only…well done :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

O @Malz Mal it is amazing to see you two and what a You’ve had a big trip and a mega upward trend since the first time I saw you together…bravo :dizzy:

@Boris1565 What a first time live … pffff … I can start writing down all the superlatives but I just bow to you :grinning_face_with_big_eyes: ( what growth in that short time)

Ruardidh @Eccleshall
What a great performance of Clapton’s song, I am also learning it, but completely differently, and am now a total fan of this performance…

@twistor59 Phil
Wow :collision: :dizzy:

David @skeletor83 Your enthusiasm is great, it compensates for the sound quality that keeps on going :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Daniel @deiussum Great standalone guitar piece

And who better to end the evening (well afternoon here) with than Toby @TheMadman_tobyjenner :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Some of my sound issues sometimes is because I don’t have any audio interface. It’s on my Christmas. Wish list to get like a Scarlet or something but it’s just picking up whatever my zoom might picks up but sometimes it works OK and sometimes isn’t. Overall, I’m really proud of my performance. I think that was my best I’ve ever done sweet home Chicago

I also have a small house and a small desk space used by multiple people so it’s hard for me just to hook up lots of stuff and have it available

Thanks a lot, Rogier for the nice words!
While you say it would be nice to see me (strange! - Did you mix me up with another participant  - Lara for example?) it’s probably nicer to see me in the also not flawless, but better performance in the last OM (Nr.29)

G’Day All,

I always look forward to watching these.

Firstly thanks to all the people that make these happen, @DavidP @TheMadman_tobyjenner @jkahn for video work, and of course all the performers because no performers, no show :person_shrugging:.

I thoroughly enjoyed the watch tonight and just wanted to make a few mentions.

Paul @mathsjunky, absolutely loved your take on a reggae song, and top work with the looping mate :ok_hand:

Boris @Boris1565 great work mate :+1: nicely done on your debut :+1: .

Rory @Eccleshall absolutely solid as ever. Homeward bound a solid favourite of mine (I have many fro those guys) and a great sound from you as always, captivating vocal mate, as it always is.

Phil @twistor59 always the pro :person_shrugging::guitar:

Toby @TheMadman_tobyjenner brilliant. I thought your sound was spot on, I didn’t know that song but really enjoyed it, the fx dialled in on the guitar were :ok_hand: and the vocal was :ok_hand::ok_hand:. Am I right in thinking you were using a vocal harmony? If so what do you use?

Anyway, great work all round. :guitar::musical_notes: everyone :love_you_gesture:

Thank you Rogier, we are pleased you enjoy our performances and your kind words are much appreciated. The journey has been a lot of fun from the first show we did to last Saturday.

Vocals were routed through my TC Helcon PlayAcoustic and I was using an FX based on the Doors Light My Fire vox with a touch of extra Room reverb on the Xenyx AI.

Go for it - it’s a simple song, open chords in the loop and triads over the top. Bit of Am pentatonic and some chord tones and away you go. It’s fun to jam to if you have a looper.

Cheers Craig - I’m using the looper all the times these day, great for practice too

3.5 years, you added me a full year! :stuck_out_tongue:
Thank you very much for the kind words.

Thank you Michael! Yes, I did BLIM 1 and now revising through BLIM 2 course. I never played Blues before. I learnt the intro and Justin’s rhythm part last year during BLIM 1 and this year I added the other two solos and those small fills in the rhythm part.

@jkahn @TheMadman_tobyjenner @twistor59 @mathsjunky @CD02 Thank you very much guys! :slight_smile:

I attended a few open mics as an audience and expected I will be asked to introduce myself. I even prepared some points so it goes smooth and fast. However, David didn’t ask and I was then way too focused to unmute, get headphones off and start the backing track. It is not just that I didn’t introduce myself, I didn’t even mention what will I play. Apologies.

So, the introduction is below, mostly copied from two BLIM classes.

Hi all, I am Boris. I live in North London, UK. I am 44 years old, dad of two young kids who are always ready to provide the most honest critique of my playing.

I started my guitar journey in Dec 21 mainly with Justin and some books as well. I love the scientific and analytical approach that Justin provides through all his materials. I had a guitar experiment for approx. a month long time ago. That didn’t go well at all, but I think it was critical for me to understand how difficult this is and to set my expectations much better this time. I was part of Justin’s “Class of 23” FB group and experienced learning together as a group through the early Justin’s grades. Since Sep 23 I go to central London weekly and play guitar with people. It started as a single weekly session, but now I do multiple sessions weekly (3 currently). I performed a few times already live in front of people, but always as part of a wider group, with at least 3 guitars on stage with me. The open mic last Saturday was the first time I performed alone.

I was part of BLIM class one and revising it through BLIM class two right now. Blues immersion course has been the biggest factor by far for my progress and motivation since last summer; I cannot recommend it more.
