Open Mic 31 Recording & After-Show Chat

Another great but intimate show. Thanks to everyone who took part, performers and audience alike. :+1:

Here’s the recording

Ah, 'twas a fun evening indeed
Many thanks to @Richtrfc for all the ‘jam-sessions’ in preparation and for co-hosting.
Look forward to the recording (You’re so vain… :musical_score: :musical_notes: )

It was a great show last night, I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Thanks to all, who make our OMs possible, whether it’s the performers, the organizer and folks behind the curtains, but even the audience. We created a very happy, supportive space for all kinds of levels and the OMs certainly always are superb and diverting events. One aspect I like most beside the overall positive vibes is the broad variety of styles and genres covered. There’s always something new, but also loads of all time classics get digged out and give me flashback to some fond, cherished musical memories. That’s highly appreciated.

All performances were really pleasant and enjoyable, but a special shout out to the two debut performers @Richtrfc Richard and @frito Joe, you both did amazing and hope to hear more of you, either solo or dueting again.

Brian @brianlarsen was as entertaining as host as always.

All of you managed to make me forget about the melting heat for a little while. Thank you!

I enjoyed seeing what goes on behind the scenes at the Open Mic sessions, having had the audience view a few times. Than you all for the warm welcome.
And an easy ride co-piloting the seasoned MC @brianlarsen !
It was good to chat to some familiar faces, especially the JG stalwart @TheMadman_tobyjenner
As Brian has said it has been great playing songs together for a few months. It really helps memorising songs from start to finish and improves timing and general co-ordination  And it’s good fun at the same time.
I would encourage anyone who has been in the audience to take the plunge and give it a go.
At the beginning of the year I had never played in front of anyone and it was with trepidation I did a couple of songs at a local Open Mic in January, having been “persuaded” by Brian to give it a go. I have done a couple more since and although it is still a rather nerve wracking experience there is a masochistic sense of achievement when you finish.
And everyone says it gets easier the more you do….

Thank you so much for the preparation and hosting, Toby @TheMadman_tobyjenner, also the duo Brian @brianlarsen and Richard @Richtrfc and also @DavidP for being there!

I really enjoyed being a part of it.
It was a bit strange that I, right after coming home from a fatiguing day, my test recording of both songs went really fine, then, playing through right before the open mic, I made lots of errors  .
So - unfortunately - I only listened very briefly to Brian and Richard, and also Mal and Lara, because I knew I had to run through both of my songs a few times before it was my turn
So I’m looking forward to see you in the recording!

I could enjoy all the other performances thoroughly!

And during / after the first song, I had the feeling for the first time, that I am happy with my performance - yay! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: or only had flaws that were minor and which I am ok with.
Also the singing slowly feels easier… or maybe I’m just less concerned with singing badly, as I’m no Caruso anyway

This open mic thing here at JG is a really nice format and it’s great to see lots of learners taking the step in the first timers OM soon!

It always feels like you’ve missed something if you don’t see it live for me …but that’s a good thing, I’ll have to do it again this week with the recordings :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:
Greetings

Thank you @TheMadman_tobyjenner, @brianlarsen, @Richtrfc and @DavidP for all the behind the scenes efforts. It was loads of fun listening to all the wonderful music and engaging in friendly banter before and after the show. While I loved the in person open mic I partook in back in March and hope to do more in the future, I particularly love this format of open mic where we can bring in songs we are still sorting through. I would never attempt to play You Gotta Move in its current “work in progress” state in a bar open mic, but this great group of people made me feel comfortable enough to give it a go.

it was a very enjoyable evening yesterday ^^

So , should we call @brianlarsen Geraldine from now on ?

it was too bad that the resonator was barely audible though

thanks to all the hosts ^^

Hey Toby - I was really looking forward to listening to last nights event but got an offer I couldn’t refuse (a Rory Gallagher tribute band evening), as I was hoping to maybe get a slot on the 1st timers event in August. Anyway, just checking whether the recording of last nights gig will be available sometime soon?

The recording is now available in post #1.

It will be added to the archives soon too.

Ooooh that would be a hard dice toss for me! Hope it was a good gig. Mr C just posted the recording, @jkahn should be announcing the First Timer OM Call For Interest in the coming days !

Thanks @TheMadman_tobyjenner and @Richard_close2u for posting the video of the OM. I wanted to attend, as I’ve never attended one of the OMs. But it was the OM or watching some of Glastonbury and Glastonbury won the day (or night). I hope to attend the next one.

Hehe, you could have had both! @Richtrfc and I kicked off the proceedings with a Rory Gallagher tribute… of sorts. Some might say we were ‘a million miles away’
Looking forward to watching you perform :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Oooh, that smarts!
(or that’s smart?)

Nice one guys, definitely a shorter and more ‘casual’ production🤣 but always great to see.

As always, hats off to everyone that did perform,

@brianlarsen I used to love that Floyd song :joy::joy: well done guys, really. I ‘m quite envious of you guys being close enough to be able to gig together :+1:

@Malz mate I thought you had moved to Australia, :scream::tropical_drink: I’m pretty sure you’d fit in with that gear on :+1:. Good stuff as always and that guitar that Lara had looked like a beauty, would like to have seen all of it.

@frito good work all round, but specifically I love the sound of 12 string so :ok_hand::ok_hand::musical_notes:

@TheCluelessLuthier Mark & Jen, always great to see you guys, all round entertainment :clap:

@Jenndye429 always solid and great that someone is supporting your genre :love_you_gesture::guitar:

I hope that the upcoming First Timers Only OM might get a few more onboard that have been reluctant to enter, and lead to some bolstering of numbers on future OMs.

If you are a first timer and are reluctant, don’t be. It really is fun, I attended one last year and it was a lot of fun I would certainly be onboard if I wasn’t time zone challenged🤣. So please get your names in, you will be well supported and assisted with any tech if you are struggling.

I’m looking forward to seeing #32 :ok_hand::musical_notes::musical_notes::love_you_gesture::love_you_gesture:

The heat might have been similar. I think in the room it must have been around 28, a little to hot for my fingers and fretboard. Lara was playing an Alvarez, lovely guitar. Pleased you enjoyed our spot. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Dear all,

I would like to thank you all for great performance.

I am using those recordings as background while working in some Excels at work and it makes my work time more enjoyable.

If I can ask here @frito I really like your guitar and that you are using slide tube. I dont know much about that and I was all the time amazed by that “dirty iron sound” with slide tube.
Do you use your slide tube how it should be? I always thought it should be 100% paralel to fret and I can see you are using it in some angle.
Also I would like to know if you know about Black Mountain Slide Ring? Its smaller and you can use better your fingerst for fretting notes.
I dont mean those questions any bad. I am just really interested about how you feel playing this style and I like to hear more.

It was great performance and I cant wait for future ones.

Thanks Craig. The 12 string is my oldest guitar dating back to 1983. Over the years I added a six hollow body and “regular” six string and played those instead of the twelve. Over the past six to nine months I have been gravitating back to the twelve. I do love it and it is the one guitar I will probably take to my grave.

Hi Michal, I am a complete novice when it comes to slide guitar, only a few weeks in to trying it. Regarding angled vs. parallel, Justin mentions on his You Gotta Move lesson to angle the slide when playing the high E (well high D in this case since it’s in open D tuning ) to avoid hitting other strings. Think you are correct that is should be parallel on the other strings and I think I had some challenges going from angled to parallel as I played different strings.

Funny you mention the lack Mountain slide. My daughter and son-in-law got me the smaller one for Christmas a couple years ago but it has mostly sat. My daughter bought me the full length Black Mountain slide I used at the open mic. I did switch between the two in my attempt to learn the song and ultimately chose to use the full sized slide since:

  1. The entire song is played with slide - there is no individual finger fretting
  2. I struggled getting the ring slide to land on the bass strings which the full sized slide did much better.

@frito Thanks for explanation. Its interesting to me that angle and paralel is way to play and it depends on the string you are playing that.

Interesting point of view about BM. I bought slide ring some time ago but only because I like concept. It is still in the drawer. Maybe one day I will try to do slides too. I was amazed by sliding from Justin Johnson, really great player.
