Richard and Paul (and David, Toby, jk) - thank you all for taking so much time to organise these events - they are so much fun and add an extra level to my guitar playing enjoyment.
I had almost forgotten how much fun it is, when it’s just turn up and perform an acoustic song by yourself, without coordinating with a jam-buddy, utilising tech like the Trio, or MC’ing, even though those are all highly enjoyable in their own right ![]()
Having time to participate in the chat is an extra bonus.
Thanks all who took part last night (or indeed after the event).
Vibes to @erionstrings for debut of the month! ![]()
Very enjoyable!
Hey @Jonjdarcy
did you try justin’s lesson on One by U2 ?
you did another version of the song ![]()
Thanks all, you’re very kind. I just watched my performance now. I couldn’t remember the details of how it went. It’s like my brain switched off when I was playing. There were so many mistakes
, but it was fun.
Something to try again in the future.
Cheers Deborah - yeah I definitely looked at Justin’s lesson but, as with all my songs, then focused on the original more than anything else and did as best I could.
Haha, exactly like I went through it! I had not a bad feeling, but now I hear the strings buzzzing and see me playing really slow. But it is like it is - I am happy I did it and it’s something to build upon!
It truly was a great show! Everyone gave it their all!
well, done everyone. Great to watch.
Just a few mentions, @DavidP , Dave you had me laughing with your banter right off the bat with your comments on 2/4 3/4 4/4 timing
Brilliant
. And your comments on the piano song and rhythm
Mate, brilliant. Good to see you back up there. ![]()
@domi7, Dom, Thank you mate for bringing back Ralph McTell. This is a song that I remember from my early childhood have sung along to it for many many years. I actually saw him perform that live here in Perth. Well played, and great choice of song.
@erionstrings , Erion, and thank you for Nothing Else Matters, awesome playing mate, well done ![]()
@Boris1565
I just love PF stuff and you made my night with Comfortably Numb, well done ![]()
But mostly well done to everyone, great mixture of acoustic, electric, lead work, fingerstyle, etc etc
![]()
And as always we are lucky we the people that are willing to host these, edit video, background camera changes etc etc, @TheMadman_tobyjenner @jkahn @Richard_close2u and well done @mathsjunky Paul for your first MC role ![]()
Hi everyone ,
Good hosting Paul ![]()
And happy to see David again, that always makes me very happy
… and that you dared to do it without that AVOYP update ![]()
as so often I could not be present live, but I enjoyed the performances from you a little later so to all you who put their heart and soul into the performance,
![]()
Greetings,Rogier
Gosh, I wrote my reply above and then forgot an important thing I knew I wanted to write, but forgot while I was thinking about my own playing…
Hey, your playing was so good, if you did mistakes ( did you? I don’t remember them! ) they were minor!
@CD02 thanks for thanking me, mate!
I envy you to have seen him live!
A big thank you to all our ‘after-hours’ audience. You’re just as welcome as appreciated as the ‘live’ ones ![]()
Regarding mistakes, it’s a topic that raised at most OMs. Personally, I don’t believe dwelling on them is desirable. In one song, I forgot the next line, adlibbed something, and carried on.
I disagree.
If I want to hear a flawless piece of music, I’ll press play on my device.
I far prefer to watch a performer walk the tightrope and recover from wobbles and ‘near disasters’ (knowing that the big ‘safety net’ of community support will safely catch anyone who does take a tumble…)
I started a thread about it a couple of years ago ![]()
Broken Mic
A copy of the live chat has now been added in post #1
Incl. Geraldine, the p***-artist formerly known as @brianlarsen ![]()
(I tagged myself
… Stop it!
)
Thanks Craig, glad you had a laugh and enjoyed the performance
Thanks Rogier, very kind, appreciate it. As for the AVOYP, if I had made a recording then at least I would have fixed my AI issues ahead of time rather than on the morning after.
As is your perogative, Brian. And at least you can be safe and secure that you’ll probably never get a flawless rendition from me, regardless as to how much I might let on if I wobble on the tightrope.
A very entertaining evening great performances and variety.
Molly @MollyT Hadn’t heard Rex’s Blues .
before, what a great song. Another one to learn! Found a great Stevie Earle version https://youtu.be/-FhjevjNLRQ?si=ojuX7sh8NNdT474r
Loved the electric guitar solos, didn’t spot any nerves or mistakes.! It’s funny how you think you are fumbling around (as I felt to start with), and when you watch the recording it’s
not as obvious as it felt at the time. Reassuring I guess .
And of course Brian @brianlarsen as entertaining as always, I’m still chortling ![]()
And Paul @mathsjunky did a fine job of keeping us all relaxed and kept the show rolling.
Can’t make the next OM but hopefully can join again in the New Year
Richard
Yes, partner in Prine @Richtrfc ! So happy someone else likes my songs, especially since you hadn’t heard it before. That Steve Earle version is a really good one with the story he is telling before he starts singing. It may well have been the version that convinced me to learn the song in the first place - I don’t remember exactly. Steve uses G and C shapes, Townes C and thumb-over F shapes.
A big thank you also from me to @Richard_close2u, @DavidP and @TheMadman_tobyjenner for organising these OMs, special call out to @jkahn for turning around the video so quickly and thanks to Paul @mathsjunky for being such a great host on the night!
These OMs always bring back fond memories of the time when I started out learning to play guitar (years ago, I have lost count of when that was), my private teacher at the time had a gathering of the students in the studio and we were all sitting cross-legged on the ground and guitars would make the round and everyone would play a song, at whatever level they were at at the time. That was such a fun evening and the community OMs have just the same vibe!
Coming together with other people who like music enough to challenge themselve to learn how to play guitar and then share their progress with others - that’s what it’s all about isn’t it - “mistakes” are a given, they just happen and will never go away (just listen closely to some live performances of songs you know well), but most fall within the band of creative interpretation anyway - no-one other than you knows that you wanted to hit the 5th and not the 6th string.
It’s obviously nerve-wrecking for the performer - like when I forgot to move my capo between songs and had to start over that kicked off an avalanche of mistakes throughout the entire first verse until I calmed down - but just take a deep breath and accept making “mistakes” are part of the experience.
Great job to all the performers. Another excellent event. I enjoyed watching you all while editing the video.
On the video - sorry about the low resolution. Zoom recorded in lo-res when it recorded to the cloud. We’re hoping that we can tweak some settings for better quality next time (although it will still limit us to 720p maximum).
Cheers Richard ![]()
So happy someone else likes my songs
There are not many Townes afficionados on the site, so you are well appreciated. The fact that you like Prine just confirms your taste ![]()
Cheers @jkahn for the tech support.
I always feel it’s going that ‘extra step’ when folk help out with the organisation when they’re not participating ![]()
while editing the video.
Missed this @jkahn … some extra
for you to say thanks ![]()
sorry about the low resolution.
I already thought what a… no, I didn’t think anything at all ![]()
I see that I didn’t thank the people around it except for the clearly visible host… wasn’t fully awake yesterday or something like that … sorry ![]()
Greetings
