How bad is it if my hand stops between the down and the up-down? For me itā€™s easy to do it like that and close to impossible to continue to strum and miss the 2ā€¦

Its a bad habit that will lead to inconsistent rhythm and timing in the future. Try to keep the hand moving even if you have to slow things right down. Practice just strumming and mute the strings. Focus on a smooth continuous down up movement and use a metronome to nail the groove.
