Original song by Jim Lynch, "It's only an election."

A lot of people have suffered the loss of relationships over this upcoming election here in the USA. Many have said things in anger to loved ones, friends, neighbors and even to strangers on social media. I’m no exception, so I felt compelled to write this song about all that called, “It’s Only An Election.” Sure it’s important, that’s why we vote, but it’s nothing to lose the people that mean the most to us over. Please, do feel free to share this link with everyone you know. The purpose of writing this song was not to sound political, but to help people stop beating each other up and mending relationships that soured over the election, not the election itself. Enjoy. I’ve been playing guitar with Justin now about 8 months.

Congrats Jim, 8 months in and you’ve written your own song, hats off mate, and enjoy the guitar journey.

Love it Jim. It’s not easy to write a good song but you got one here. I wrote a ton and of awful songs before I found one that I liked so well done that you wrote a good one this early in your guitar journey!

The message you’re conveying in this song is so important… It appeals to me in every aspect. as I’ve witnessed a similar phenomenon of breaking relationships on political grounds here in Poland, too. Thanks for sharing, Jim.
Regards
Tomasz

Thanks CDO2. I’ve written a few, but playing the banjo, that’s mostly what I’ve played them on. I have one I wrote for and play on the piano as well. I’m no master musician, I just enjoy playing the different instruments for my own amusement. Sometimes a song sounds better on a particular instrument. I plan to record ‘It’s Only An Election’ using the banjo, but I think it plays better on guitar. We’ll see. Thanks for viewing and the nice comments.

Thanks Eddie, this one came to me one day. As the election here drew closer, I had to finish a line or two to complete it. I see other comments about the message the song sends, at least one from another country in Europe, so I guess this happens no matter where you are. I had a tune I started a few weeks ago, again it just popped into my head about my leaving the frosty north in New York for Florida, and when I listened to East Virginia Blues one day, I realized I’d written my song to be sung to the tune of that one. No wonder it sounded pretty good. Had to laugh. I’ll keep the wording, but will change the music a bit to finish it. I have a few others I’ve recorded, but mostly for the 5 string banjo. One was written specifically for the piano. Sometimes a tune plays better on a particular instrument, or it does due to the words. Thanks again so much for viewing the video. Enjoy your own guitar journey. Jim

Thanks Tomasz, I’d hoped people would see it as a political message more than a message of hope and healing over something that won’t last forever and they really have little control over other than voting, which is of course a huge thing in itself. Thanks for viewing the video. Glad you enjoyed it. Jim

Congratulations on writing and sharing your first (original) song here in the Community Jim. Kudos for taking the big step to putting your singing and playing out there in public. And all in the cause of seeking a more harmonious, peaceful living together. In the UK in similar manner (a national referendum), deep family and friend rifts broke people apart in 2016. We don’t go into politics in the Community, for many good reasons, but healing and positivity is welcome!
Good vibes to you.

Thanks Richard, I really appreciate the nice comments. I also heard from a guy in Poland who said the same thing about elections there causing people to break apart. Elections are important, but elected officials are temporary. Relationships should be long lasting.

I also wanted to thank you for the recent lesson on playing with 2 guitars. It presented way more than I expected, and I learned a lot from it. I was able to review the information afterwards from snapshots I took with my phone of your charts and with a bit of practice, and a lot of patience, figure most of it out and put it to use, albeit slowly. I was excited to see the fretboard broken down and simplified that way. It helped tame the beast for me. I also play a bit of 5 string banjo, and there’s a similar method of breaking down the fretboard on that with moveable chord shapes to create other chords further up the neck. Awesome job putting that together, and again, thank you!
