Original song - It's all right

I’ve been trying to challenge myself by writing songs from lyrics gifted by others. My niece Sara gave me a poem she wrote recently and I’ve worked up the attached. I thought I’d try framing a song around a piano motif to mix up my practice on that instrument:

Congratulations to both of you, Neil and Sara!
Love your song and hope you’ll do more!

The main thing I see you could improve is learn a bit more about “mixing”.
Mainly there was so much of a long reverb or delay and for me it took a bit away of that otherwise very nice song!
At the start, I think it still works with piano and E-guitar. But as the acoustic and bass comes in my ears get confused.

And then (if you want to) just a bit of EQing so that every part comes through nicely. But I know, learning more about this can be a bit boring - playing, singing and recording is much more fun and fun is the most important part!

David, Coda, Willsie, Eddie, Domi, Oleg and DeltaTyne, Thanks to all for taking time to listen and comment, very kind.

Morning Neil,
I know I’m biased, but I do enjoy seeing new posts from you, esp. when you share new songs
This is probably my favourite track of yours to date, and it must be extra special for you, having your daughter write the lyrics.
You shouldn’t be shy about blowing your own trumpet, so I’ll remind everyone here that you are playing all the instruments yourself, on top of composing and mixing duties.
Wow! Take a bow  :bouquet: :champagne:
The piano works well, as does the bass. Your penchant for indie means you don’t avoid reverb, but that’s fine.
If I had to seek an Achilles’ heel, I was wondering if a slightly lower register might have suited your voice better
… and if Sara went to the trouble of writing lyrics and you felt they were good enough to sing-
share them for those who don’t want to miss out
I know it’s all right but want to know more

Now that Brian mentioned it, I found your other songs and videos where you play all the instruments - impressive!

Very nice song Noel. I’m impressed with your ability to play all the instruments and mix it all together.

Nice!!

Thanks Domi, I use the recordings I do as a way to practice all of the instruments and also learn a bit more about the recording process.

Hi Brain, I hope you and the family are keeping well. It’s always a pleasure to hear from you and also to read your many posts on the platform. Your comments re the instrumentation are well received and thanks for the kind words. I’m particularly please that you’re fine with the reverb for, although, I was careful to dial it down, I do like it (yes from indie penchant!). I get that it’s not to everyone’s taste but likewise I’m not enthused about the singer/songwriter vibe (apart from yours Brian!), but I can still appreciate the artistry involved. The Achilles’ heel you refer to is an interesting one. Although I’ve had no formal vocal training I have a somewhat sketchy understanding of voice training principles and I’ve been practicing singing with my “head voice” lately. Given the original piano riff that started the song creation and the chords involved, I thought I’d use it to practice head voice and came up with melody around it. The alternative was to transpose everything down and on balance singing in that register was an opportunity to practice as well avoiding the complication of transposition. Best wishes to you my friend!
Neil

Just noticed my typo using the name Brain, but in retrospect, it sort of fits!

Nice vibe to this sound. Maybe a bit more compression on voice and maybe harmony

Thanks Mac, for the comments. Why do you think more compression would help on the vocal? Re harmony, excellent idea and I don’t know why I never thought of it. I might go back and add it if I get some relevant ideas.
