Our Christmas gig

We played our Christmas gig last night - nearly a two hour set - so here are a few highlights …

Run Rudolph Run - Chuck Berry (I’m singing on this one too!)

Dakota - Stereophonics

California Waiting - Kings of Leon

Hey Joe - Jimmy Hendrix Experience

Come Together - The Beatles

Blaze of Glory - Jon Bon Jovi

Two hours gig is a proper concert! Amazing Paul, you guys sounded really good, very professional. Awesome lead playing on Hey Joe.

Yeah thats really cool you guys sound great. Good job with your vocals and really sweet playing too. Only one sweater? :joy:
He is good vocalist also. Killer band going.

I do have a question about the keyboard location. It looks like there is cab on top of the rig and then the key board in on top of a box or at least somthing covering the keyboard stand. Then the whole thing is stage left and sort of forward. A number of the videos There were people having to come way forward to see around that to see the rest of the band. Does that equipment block the view maybe? I have no idea what the lay out of the venue is or what, maybe there could be a very real reason why it is supposed to be the way it is. Maybe not that much room. Sort of tough in some of those small places.

Regardless you guys sound great. :sign_of_the_horns:t2:

Some good stuff going on here Paul, nice one. Good gig!
I second Davids’ comment about the audio though.

Great set Paul! Super achievement by all there.
Were you tuned down a half step? I was listening with my guitar and heard quite a few Eb and Bbs

Super stuff, Paul. Great to see you progressing from BLIM to regular gigs with the band.

Now, that sounds like a proper concert gig, Paul! Great stuff and what a superb vibe from your band.

Looks like loads of fun for you guys as well as the audience!

Thanks David! Yes, the gig was recorded with an iphone nailed to the wall, so not great. We did however have a Zoom recorder down near the monitors - I’ve not yet heard how that sounded, but it might be a lot better

Cheers Boris. It was interesting to hear your band play Dakota - really liked your version!
It was a long set - 21 songs in total!
London calling
Paint it black
Knocking on Heaven’s door
Hey Joe
Paranoid
Come together
California waiting
Lean on me
Livin La vida
Heros
van Diemen’s Land
Can’t get you out of my mind
Delilah
Thank U
Dakota
Only want to be with you
Islands in the Stream
Run Rudolph
Champagne Supernova
Blaze of glory
Bullet the blue sky

All the solos were improvised normally with a motif or two in mind, the only exception was ‘Only want to be with you’ where the solo is the vocal line and pretty much needs to be played note for note.

Thanks Jason - Jon’s Christmas sweater is not as Christmasy as it looks if you read it (thankfully there’s a guitar in the way  ) I had a Christmas T on, but it was too cold to take off the jumper!

Yes, it’s a long thin room and the only exit is right by the keyboard, the camera is on the wall. The whole room is only as wide as the stage, but it goes back a fair way. Not easy to set up, but it works pretty well.

Thanks Mal - appreciate the kind words!

I’ve said it before - you have good ears! Yes, Jon like to play everything down 1/2 step so my ‘gigging strat’ wears 11s and stays in Eb standard. I make good use of the Youtube ‘transpose’ plugin!

Cheers James - Yes, I’ve learned a lot this year. I might write that up!

Thank you Lisa! We had a blast - the band are a great bunch of people - I’ve been very lucky to play with these guys.

Wow, nice one, Paul, well done to you all, 2hrs is a lot of playing, looked like a great gig :+1: cheers Hec

Thank you Paul. Interestingly, I noticed a few lead lines that you played on Dakota that I liked very much. I decided to borrow this for future gigs.

Thanks Hec - I came to that gig straight from a 2 hour jam session

I nicked all the lines I used from the Sterophonics  If it’s the lines in the chorus then the hard part is getting enough sustain to keep the multiple bends going on one pick. I used gain and compression (and a lot of volume!).
Also fun to use a phaser on this song - apparently on stage they use some pre-recorded guitar so that the phaser is in time with the rest of the band - too much detail for me

That was great. Really enjoyed it. It would be great if you can get a better recording of the band at those gigs.

Nice tight session Paul, though I only bounced around catching snippets here and there. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Wow Paul, super stuff :star_struck::heart_eyes: I listened ti Rudolph and Blaze of glory and they just sounded great! You were right, if you remember my silly comment on the Rudolph avoyp, the solos are really “supported/sustained” in the band contest.

Bravo Paul - a 2-hour festive gig is a big deal and the work of hours of playing and rehearsing.
Absolutely amazing - I’m thrilled for you doing this.
