We played at a local music festival last night, we were backing a young singer songwriter performing there (Keira Almond). Played a few of her originals and some covers.
Loads of fun
Didn’t have much of a sound check so bit harder to hear myself than I would have liked - I’m blaming that for a couple of dodgy bends
It sounded really good to me Paul, well done. You could have been a bit louder on your solo part, but it was audible and what you played really fits this really catchy song nicely.
I think that self monitoring is indeed the biggest problem. Unless you bring your own solution, you never know how it will be. Even if there are monitors available, you don’t have enough time to try every song and set levels properly.
Cheers Molly. Keira is a guitar student with one of our band and wanted some backing, so we very happily obliged. It was a really nice festival - very grateful to have the opportunity to play it.
Thanks Adrien, I don’t know much Chris Stapleton, but Keira wanted to do two of his songs, they are fun to play.
Cheers Boris - Yeah, the nature of the festival meant there wasn’t time for much other than a line check before we started. There was a sound man operating the desk live, but he hadn’t heard the set so didn’t know what to expect. To be fair, the sound people did a great job, but I didn’t have a full FoH mix so couldn’t be sure of my volume levels.
It’s so nice to see you up there, Paul!
I should better get an autograph soom before you’ll be too famous!
I listened with loudspeakers at a moderate volume, so I can’t comment as well as others (or they simply are more attentive or equipped with better ears ) but the whole sounded very enjoyable and I couldn’t notice any faults by you.
Dreaming to play in a similar setup, I fear this subject a bit… while I still have to play with only ONE other person to begin with
… but I heard other guitar players mentioning the same problem and I think it was Mark Knopfler in an interview talking about how nice it was to play in a setup like those MTV unplugged series setups (or was it Eric Clapton on the famous acoustic album back then?) because after years he could finally hear himself well again on stage
Cheers Alexey, it’s certainly been a wirlwind this past year or so! Having a blast.
Thanks Phil, this mix is entirely down the the sound guys at the stage, but they had a lot on their plates and really did a great job considering.
Cheers Dominique, appreciate it!
Playing with others is honestly a game changer. I think it’s a huge benefit to anyone at any level. It all started with me when I joined a local jamming group (I’m now a regular at 3 different jam groups, including one we started ourselves). I’d really encourage you to look around and see if there’s a local one you can join.
Personally I think that playing music with others is one of the best feelings one can experience in life, so every time anyone else gets to do it, I am happy. Thank you for sharing and keep 'em coming !
