Our U2 Gig

I play in the House Band for a local Charity organisation, we play at various events including the open mic nights they host.

4 weeks ago we decided to put on a fund raising gig playing U2 covers, we had two solo artists and another band supporting us. Turned out it was live streamed too!

The band uses some ‘borrowed’ musicians … the vocalist/guitarist, drummer and bass player are in other bands, but we all come together for this.

We only managed to get 5 rehearsals in, but it turned out pretty well.

I certainly have a whole new respect for The Edge’s guitar playing - he uses some beautiful and simple ideas to great effect. Talking of effects, I was using a Strat, tuned to Eb with 11 gauge strings through my Quad Cortex.

Here’s the whole gig - it’s a 1 hour set. I’ve put timestamps in the description on Youtube if you want to jump around

There’s a bit of everything in here, ballads, Heavy stuff, U2 Classics, Slide playing (Kite/Bullet), some improvised solos and some written ones.

00:00 Where The Streets Have No Name

04:13 The Fly

08:35 New Years Day

12:40 Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For

17:12 Bad

24:10 Angel of Harlem

27:38 Pride in the Name of Love

30:52 All I Want is You

35:56 Van Diemen’s Land

41:00 Kite

46:33 Sunday Bloody Sunday

53:30 Bullet the Blue Sky

Wow - excellent stuff Paul.

Indeed. I played Beautiful Day in a cover’s band and it alone taught me a lot about his style and skill.

Nice one Paul, thanks for sharing this. I caught the first two numbers and will watch the rest later.
What is going on with the mix? The vocals are ‘muted’ during the songs and higher when no music is being played. Or is it simply the lack of noise? :grinning_face_with_big_eyes:

That was excellent, Paul, especially taking into consideration the turnaround time to learn all those songs and Jon’s last minute additions to the set list.

Amazing result Paul, 12 songs which went really well after 5 rehearsals. You must feel over the moon (you should!).

Cheers Richard. Studying his work is a masterclass on triads and single string major scale lines.

Thanks Ashu - it was such fun to do. Few of those songs I didn’t know at all 4 weeks ago, I bought The Joshua Tree (like everyone else!) when it came out, but a lot of U2 passed me by,

Thanks Mal.
It was really loud - I measured some rehearsals close to 110dB in places, I think the old iphone being used to stream is was struggling a bit!

Cheers James - I’m begining to suspect that learning songs is a skill. The more I learn, the easier it seem to get.

Thanks Phil - I was pretty happy. There are a few mistakes of course, but we had a blast.

Cheers Jason - He’s tall, but not excessively so. I think the perspective is a bit misleading

Thanks Dom! It’s a great band, great musicians and great personalities.

Cheers! Yes, really happy with the result

:joy: I thought you guys were going for another Krist Novoselic or Peter Steele.

Right on, I’m stoked for your band Paul.
