So for me, this isn’t so much about how I’ve improved and more about what I have learned.
Here’s my ‘before’ video …
I wanted to showcase the breadth of the course as it’s not all about soloing. So I got the looper out …
There’s some baselines and chords and some rhythm work with triplets. There’s transcribing … I nicked the main lick in this from BB’s Sweet Little Angel only this morning and I rounded it off with some gospel slides. Apart from the 5 note lick from BB which I wanted to include the rest is improvised.
Hopefully overall a little more coherent than the ‘before’ attempt. However I don’t see this as the last video, just the latest - there’s so much material to revisit and work on!
The course has been a blast and I’m sorry to see it end, but #BBP lives on
Lovely stuff, Paul. I’m glad you showcased the rhythm elements as well as the soloing. The latest recording is definitely more coherent than the initial recording. I can hear some of the blues inspirations coming out in your playing from all that listening and transcribing we did over the last 6 months. Looking forward to the next 6 months #BBP Lives On
Hi Paul, I love the layers, cool idea. As for the comparison - the baseline was great, but I can definitely hear major improvement with the latest improvisation. I thought it was really good, very nice licks.
Happy to see you putting your newly developed skills to good use, Paul
I enjoyed watching you build up the track with the looper. Impressive rhythm and lead, and tone very cool (I felt the drum track lacked a bit of that ‘swing’ feeling) .
I’ve always been impressed with your guitar chops, live and in recordings.
If you had told me these two recordings were in reverse order though, I still would have commented ‘Wow, that’s much better’. (possibly due to the backing track, but more likely my ignorance )
I have slightly mixed feelings about BLIM topics in the general Community.
One the one hand, it’s great to see the enthusiasm and enjoyment my friends are getting from the course and to witness the progress they are making. It’s also invaluable for anyone thinking about taking part in the future. No doubt a great help for Justin promoting the course.
The downside for me is I can’t help but feel a twinge of exclusion with the mention of closed soirees or hashtag links that are immune to my clicks
Maybe I loves y’all too much…
Happy Blue Year!
Nicely done Paul. The first vid was actually good, but the second one showcased a more technique and phrasing. Definitely not appropriate to try to rank the two, since the styles are totally different.
Thanks Roger - It’s been a rather intense 6 months, but loads of fun.
Thanks a lot Phil - Certainly thinking about phrasing much more these days
Appreciate that Jason, tone is something I’ve been actively working on, so it’s great you noticed! Quad Cortex Fender Reverb with a touch of blues driver.
Sounds really good Paul. I’ve always been impressed by your playing, however, can definitely note an improvement between the videos. The timing, groove, feel and licks are all well matured.
The before video is already great, and I like there the phrasing, use of pauses, and call-and-response.
Super idea with the after video where you used the looper and showed various new skills. I think it will pay off that you’ve paid much attention to not just solos but also the rhythm playing. Great job, and plus one to #BBP lives on
Some really nice work showing in both videos, Paul. I’m a big fan of the well-rounded approach. Plus, It’s always fun to see the judicious use of a looper pedal!
Really appreciate the kind words. I’ve been working hard on timing and phrasing, and enjoying playing with my old looper which had gathered a bit of dust recently
