Picking advice

Justin has always preached to learn what you need to learn now, not technique for techniques sake

I play solo acoustic, singing and doing cover songs

I’ve been picking out individual strings while strumming chords, adding a bit of dynamics

Working fine

Then I read about this hybrid picking

Worth working on it?

Or stick to what works for me now at my level of playing?

By the way, I’m not a great “singer”, but I’ve found that singing adds so much to my enjoyment of the instrument and music.

Thank you, community

I mean why not give it a try , I cant imagine doing it whilst singing is going to be easy.

Its basically half way between playing with a pick and fingerpicking is that something you want to do?

Hey Tom!

After Justin hosted Joe Robinson for a lesson, I looked for some of his other videos on YouTube & thought this was interesting:

Enjoy!!!

Hi Tom, I’d say check it out if you’re curious. If you like it and have a song suited to hybrid picking, practice with that. If you find it especially challenging or just not necessary for the things you’re currently working on (i.e. it doesn’t make you smile to work on it), set it aside until you find a need for it. You are now two cents richer.

Do you have any favorite artists that play with hybrid picking?

My favourite is Richard Thompson. His grandson offers courses on how to play Richard’s songs. I haven’t tried the course myself…but hope to get good enough to attempt it someday.
