Picks and plectrums

Thumb picks.
I know I know. Yuck. But so many great players use them. What is going on with these pesky bits of plastic.
For years, I’ve tried to get to grips with them.
And I’d like to share that I’m finally getting a win
These banjo picks in varying stiffnesses are much nicer to use, and Ive got them to fit.
My win came by not trying too hard, just messing around, taking the pressure off, and using them every day for a while.
Must say the sound is sooo much more.

Thick plectrums
ditto.
Now I’ve persevered with a 1.5mm monster for some kinds of playing and it is starting pay off, especially for picking out melodies and also for jazzier chord progressions

Hi Ruaridh,
I know and use this pick too I wasnt aware they are considered Banjo Picks. I know them as Fred Kelly Speed Picks Here they are at Thomann Fred Kelly Picks Delrin Speed Pick 8 pcs.Set M – Thomann Ireland
I find them somehow easier for controling the tone, now I really have to get used to using them.
Thicker picks seem to have a tone advantage too.

They are great, whatever they were originally made for.
The smaller “sharp end” seems very controllable.
I’ve got some slick-picks too in various styles that have been hanging around unused for a while , and I’m going to see howm I get on with then too, now that I’ve made friends with them.
My battered thumb nail is very relieved…

Black Mountain Picks has an innovative take that a lot of people really seem to appreciate. They might be worth a try for anyone using a thumb pick.

Hey Ruaridh,

it’s good to hear that using those thumb picks now works for you!
I’m always fleeing using picks since I started, prefer to use my fingers while I think that that experience would certainly have benefits!

bought one too as there were quite a few people liking them. I think I’ll have to have a short daily practice bit with picks from now on, like you did, Ruaridh!

All the best,
Dominique

I switched to these recently, and found them much more comfortable than the Dunlop ones I had before. They can also be used as a regular pick if you want to mix finger style and plectrum picking.
