Plush - Acoustic

Hello friends, I have a cover of one of my favorite “unplugged” rock songs: Plush by Stone Temple Pilots. I am nearing the end of my Level 3 lessons, and continuing to practice and sharpen those skills (along with theory), but I also like to take opportunities to explore “challenge” songs (similar to how Justin describes songs in the ‘developer’ and ‘dreamer’ categories). This song helped me to progress in numerous ways, the first being that it really taught me how to orient my practice sessions toward what I need to perform better. For this song, I found that I needed to emphasize the following skills into my practice sessions: pinky strength, backbeat hit, clean chord changes, barre chords, string muting, and being able to target specific strings while strumming. I found that I struggled with string muting to play the percussive parts after the backbeat hit when moving from chords G-D-F, but that got better with time. Now, after watching the video, I think I need to spend some time on being able to get away from my “concentrated” face while I play!

As always, I welcome any constructive feedback if you have some. Cheers!

Hi Ethan,

I’m not familiar with ‘Plush’ but enjoyed your version!
It seemed like your timing was a bit off in the Intro, but not knowing the song, I may be wrong… Once you got more into the piece, it felt like you were more ‘in the zone’ & timing along with the vibe were better to my ears!
I definitely thought this was good & really liked the percussive elements! Good Job!!!

Thanks for that feedback, much appreciated! I think I tend to start tense/timid, particularly when I am recording myself (perhaps its the initial fear I will mess up on a take!). I definitely need to work on getting “in the zone” right off the bat.

For reference, here is the STP electric guitar version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eb3kAUQxinQ

Such a great song. Man I sure do miss STP. They put on a great show back in the day.

I cant seem to give the vocals justice while playing it yet so have not recorded this song. Great job. So glad you posted. I need to out some time into my Alt tuning songs.

:+1:t2:

This was really awesome! I love STP!

They were my favorite band to sing karaoke to when I was younger. I still can’t play guitar and sing them yet….

Your chord changes are smooth, your strumming is steady and it sounds good. Well done.

Me too, never got the chance to see them live during their reunion years back in 2008ish, but I do love their music. It was one of the many 90s-ish bands I grew up listening to

I appreciate it! I am self aware enough to know that my singing sounds like that of a dying horse, so I decided to omit the vocals on this one

Ethan, well done with a challenging acoustic guitar piece. The percussive strumming really added to the song. I wasn’t familiar with this song either and checked out the STP acoustic version on YouTube. I added this my long list of great songs to try that I have gotten from AVOYP like yours. I can’t add more since I still a little unfamiliar with the song. Just good job performing a song with challenging rhythm and chords.

Thanks, Steve. Agree, it is a great song; I really can’t do it the original justice, but it’s fun to play nevertheless.

Nice job Ethan, and you certainly have developed quite a few skills in your journey so far. Onwards and upwards :sunglasses:

Nice playing Ethan. Plush is a great song. Lots of challenging bits.

I noticed a few times in your playing you were slipping a beat in some of the trickier transitions. Might want to check that out as nailing the timing will help polish the song.

Hi Ethan, I so remember this song and for sure this is a challenging song to learn. But it sounded great to me. Keep it up the more you play this song the more comfortable you will be playing it…
