Should the next Motivation & Inspiration Live Club be about transposing?
You would like to play and sing a song but the key doesn’t fit your voice? Not so fluent with barre chords yet and you want to transpose a song to a more ‘open chord friendly’ version?
Transposing= changing the key of a song. You might need that to fit a vocal (yours of another), to fit in with a band playing a song in a certain key or just to experiment with voicings, grips and flavours. When you sing yourself, it is always best to sing in your optimal range; it’s easier to adapt your guitar playing than the range of your voice.
The session could feature:
I which cases would you transpose and when to transpose up or down?
How to transpose with and without capo?
some easy song examples; step by step method to transpose yourself, manually and without capo.
how to combine down/up tuning of your guitar with transposing
some useful online tools that help the process
POLL: Should the next Motivation & Inspiration Live Club be about transposing?
Yes!
No, I have a different idea (leave in comments)
Doesn’t matter, I enjoy the sessions either way
doesn’t matter because I don’t care about these Live Clubs

Feel free to be honest about the value this would have for you;
I voted Yes. I would add that it might be good to include specific music theory knowledge needed to understand what will be presented. That is, what are the prerequisites for the material? It seems it would be difficult for a beginner with no real understanding of music theory to follow this. If the prerequisites could be presented with reference to Justin’s lessons, that would be even better!
I think transposing without a capo would be a great session, with some typical maybe changes that can be made and are being made by people, where you dont end up with strange chord shapes. And examples of those songs would be great too!
This topic and all the aspects that are mentioned would be very interesting and helpful.
Exactly what I need to make life as a beginner a little easier (I hope)
Going to abstain on the vote, as I’m unlikely to be attending clubs for the next few months because I’m currently immersed in the Blues, and I don’t have any mental bandwidth left for anything that isn’t part of BLIM ! That said, it’d be great to have a recorded transposition lesson to check out when I come back to Earth
I’ve had good luck with apps that can transpose recordings e.g. Moises, and just using trial and error experimenting with a capo to find a good key for my voice.
For anyone who would like to do a little preliminary reading, learning and experimenting, this topic may be useful.
It is not about changing key. Quite the opposite. It is about staying in the same key. Using a capo. Some of the content will / can transfer across to aspects Lieven might develop.
Never heard of Moises, thanks. Just checked it out and it has an impressive drum/vocal/rest separation tool where you can change the pitch of a song and mute all drums and vocals to focus on a guitar line. Also very handy to turn up or down the tempo (and it adds an AI metronome). In the first place I would use that in transcribing use cases but it can help for transposing too. worth mentioning indeed!
I was going to mention
the Transpose brower plugin: https://transpose.video/ (instant transpose youtube video’s and change tempo etc)
First of all, I’ll show you how you could do it yourself so you could do it on the fly, on a stage, or just quickly matching ideas without having to go grabbing some phone or pc right away. It’s what I call ‘the easiest piece of theory’ you can learn and it will keep on giving
