Hey folks trying to learn the guitar. I’m in grade 1 and module 5. I’ve taken on the following chords and practice them all some with an emphasis on A,D and E the other chords are Amin, Dmin, Emin, C and G just trying to stay ahead and have plenty to work on. However with the practice routines to include all 5 modules it’s close to and hour and the finger pain is real lol! I was wondering what you all thought about breaking practice down to say 2 20 to 30 minutes a day? I am starting to work on songs Three little birds etc. Thanks!
Hey Edward, great to see you on the community. I’m six months in and remember the finger pain very clearly. When I did grade one I did around 30 mins Practice a day and gradually built it up as the fingers got better. Your fingers will improve but listen to your body as it will tell you when to back off a bit. Even now at the end of grade two, my fingers hurt if I play for too long despite the calluses. Take care and enjoy yourself. It’ll be well worth it.
Yes, break up your practices. I often have 4-5 short session due to interruptions. When I can do it, I will often practice the technique stuff in the morning and learning/playing songs and doing fun stuff in the evening. My brain is usually tired in evenings, and it just works better for me.
you can also start to eliminate class sessions as you get some competency. You will replace those with new things you need to get under control. Keep the total list to something you can handle.
Breaking up your practice is a great idea. I had to do that in the early days because of finger pain
Thanks for the great comments this helps! Keep strumming!
are you using the practice assistant? its nowhere near an hour, maybe 25 minutes. the practices build on each other as you progress. if your on grade 5, no need to do the grade 1 practice anymore
Breaking your sessions up will certainly not harm but I’d encourage more focus on the song learning. That way you are practicing the chords and the application. Win win,
Hello Edward, did I get it right? You’re doing the practice routines of all 5 modules every day? That’s not necessary. If you feel confident with the content of one module, move on to the next one, and replace the former practice routine by the new one. Your fingers will thank you .
