That is exactly what my offline-teacher always says. However, I find that somewhat difficult, being an impatient person

I have realised lately that when I practice a song, I do sometimes practice it using totally wrong timing/beat. Maybe it’s because I am new. Also I think it’s because I start slow to get the finger placement correct before speeding up. One example is Pretty Fly (power cords). It’s very fast for me cause I’m a beginner. I do realise this after getting finger placement correct after practicing it like 1000 times! So is it ok to first get placement correct and then worry about beat? Sometimes the wrong beat can get stuck and then after listening to the song I have to practice the correct beat. What exercises can I do to get faster? Up to beat or does it come with time. I’m 5 month’s in. Love power cords but stil strugling to speed them up. Cowboy cords is much easier for me to change now.

I learn the pattern or sequence of notes / chords by moving my hand around the fretboard and not worrying about rhythm initially. That said once I feel I know the pattern I’m well enough to play through slowly then I try to get the rhythm right. I try to avoid learning the wrong rhythm as you’ve then got something to unlearn

I recently read a book about guitar that recommends just this: first try to play it without paying much attention to the tempo or even that much to the rhythm. Just practice getting the fingers in the right places and picking or strumming the right notes. Then when you can get the physical movements in good shape you can start with a very slow metronome.
