Practice video or app?

Hi everyone. I’m new to JustinGuitar and so far am very impressed. I’ve started learning many instruments in the past but JG might be the thing that keeps me going and helps me actually become a player! Anyway, I’m after some advice about building a practice regime please.

The free online video lessons include several segments about how to practice as well as advice about creating a practice schedule (eg using the downloadable practice grid). However, the app also includes practice sessions, which seem to be linked to whatever module or level you are working on at the time.

The videos offer great advice about taking things slowly and ā€˜practice makes permanent’ etc but I’m not sure whether it’s best to use the videos or the app to design my practice schedule. Does anyone know whether the app content has superceded the online videos - at least in terms of practice regimes and deciding what to practice at any one time?

Many thanks.

I’ve never used the app but I’m sure it would be similar to the website. I would suggest go with the recommended practice routine at the end of each module.

I haven’t used the app for a couple of years, but the app used to have some nicely integrated practice routines with built-in timers. I found these easier to use than doing it from the website. My practice just seemed to flow better, without having to worry about timers and what the next thing to practice was.

However, note that the website has some content associated with the lessons that the app does not have… The app only has the videos. Whereas the website has a text overview for every lesson, and occasionally PDFs for tab or other supporting materials.

I suggest you try both approaches for a couple of lessons, and see which works best for you.

When you’re very early in your guitar journey the app is brilliant. When I started I used the app for practice, and the website for lessons.

Somewhere in Grade 2 or 3 it became more beneficial to do my own practice routine - see what works for you.

I found the same as @jkahn The app was good in the beginning but I really appreciated the lessons on the website later especially as there’s extra content as text and diagrams below to supplement the lesson.
Also I subscribe to the TABS for Justin’s song lessons and that has been very useful. I did find the practice sessions on the app very helpful though in grade 1

The practice suggestion videos on the website have a ā€œPracticeā€ tab. It has a button to add the suggested routine to the practice section of your dashboard automatically, removing the hassle of creating it all yourself. Then you just press play and it’ll run you through the routine with timers and relevant videos. Easy peasy.

No, the app does not supersede the website. It’s essentially the same content but just delivered in a slightly different way. You’ll be learning and practising the same things at the same times either way.

Id say both

The website for learning and the app for practicing
very easy to find songs matching the technics taught in the lessons with the app

from grade 1 to grade 3 the app is very helping

Thanks for your replies everyone. It seems to be a bit of ā€˜choose your adventure’ and using both the website and the app in different ways (and perhaps stages in your journey).
