Hi everyone. I wrote this a year or so ago. I had other originals I wanted to work on, so this one took a back seat for a while.
It’s a protest song. You, the listener get to decide what I’m protesting about - probably best not to post your guesses though lest we fall foul of one of the forum rules🤷♂️. You also, if you are that way inclined, get to sing your profanity of choice😀.
I’m not sure yet how much more effort to put in it. I may add drums and bass. I’ve asked my son to do drums, if he does I’ll add a bass line. I’ve left space for a solo, but am not sure it will add to the song. Choices, choices.
I want leave space for the listener to add their profanity of choice, but I’m not sure how that will work without the video and / or familiarity with the song.
Any thoughts are welcome, on either anything I’ve said above or anything else you care to mention.
Lyrics:
Verse 1:
It came to you on your promises
You did exactly what you said you’d do
But it’s no good for the rest of us
Insert profanity of choice
Verse 2:
Your mates tell the news that you want told
Tricks loads of folks to expect the best
But it’s no good for rest of us
You’re all ………….
Verse 3
The boy stood on the burning deck
You know the one ‘cause you set it on fire
But it’s no good for the rest of us
You’re such destructive ……….
Almost certainly. That was my profanity of choice though. You are welcome to the same one, or can choose your own. You don’t get writing credits though .
Yes, I think you are right Deborah. I’ve just told my son he should be angry in the drumming.
It is tough playing and singing at 160bpm though. A lot of punk songs are quicker than that. So if anyone tells you that punk musicians aren’t skilled musicians, you know that’s not always true.
That was a lot of fun, I think it would be worth fleshing it out if you have the time.
I like the idea of inserting a profanity of choice, maybe you could do a really brief spoken-word intro (possibly over a couple intro chords) explaining how it works.
I was a teenager when the punk scene exploded and I used to go to pubs (illegally as I was underage) to see all the local punk bands (some subsequently became quite famous). This reminds me of very much those days. The music was raw and often several of the people on stage couldn’t actually play the instruments - (that wasn’t an allusion to your playing I might add) but it was a lot of fun (except for the spitting) with a lot of energy.
In punk, bass riffs are very important - so given that you are a bassist, I hope you are soon going to add a nice punky bass track to that! That will be the cherry on the cake.
Now I’ve just read this. Yes, you definitely need to add the bass line to make it sound fuller.
Yay! Good stuff, Simon!
A bit of grit in the system is what generates pearls
Yes, more!
Drum n bass kinda required to drive the punk energy. If you record the vocals separately, you can focus on being more ‘shouty’
I’m surprised there are not more punk offerings shared- it’s fun.
Also, no need to sit on the fence. The ‘forbidden topics’ are all legit if in song. It’s the discussion they need to be avoided in.
Nail your colours to the mast and be damned!
Yeah, I would treat it seriously Simon; give it your best. Like Ian, I can hear the echoes of the late 1970s UK scene, but the band I think this sounds most like is the Ramones.
Thanks for the encouragement. I’ll start thinking about a bass line whilst waiting for the drums.
I agree the drums and bass are very important for a punk track. It was more that I wasn’t overly sure about the song, so was in 2 minds as to whether to put any more effort into it.
Agreed. (I need to be careful of the internet trolling accusations of miming though ).
That’s a good idea. - thank you.
That’s very punk.
I was thinking it would be anti-punk to try and clean up my somewhat messy playing😂
I agree - Ramones. I initially told the drummer “more Sex Pistols than Green Day”. Then last night I was doing some ear training using Ramones songs, which prompted me to give the drummer three Ramones songs as reference tracks. I didn’t have the Ramones in mind when writing it, but then when I look at my punk play list the 1st 6 songs on it are by the Ramones - so they may well have been a sub-conscious influence.
Indeed. I have theories. Maybe it’s something for a “just chatting” topic.
This post has gone on way too long. It’s becoming more Prog than Punk.
I agree with others that drum and bass would make it punk out harder. Unfortunately my profanities are all compound and are too long to fit in the allocated space
