Recording, backing tracks and attenuation

was hoping to make a recording today but didn’t expect a couple of issues to crop up.

Thinking about it now it makes sense that it is the way it is.

Attenuation affecting recording level at the DAW not just at the speaker

also, Amp line inputs (Aux) not being received at the DAW, that completly threw me, I was not expecting that at all.

Try ,try , Try again  lol

Might of had a new recording for you all , ho hum as they say.

Don’t know if you wanted a comment or not Rachel. Perhaps it was just your observation.

I think your observation is correct.
I set my levels at the audio interface. 2i2 in my case.
If I’m playing my amp loud, the AI is turned down.
If I’m playing soft, the AI is turned up.
The goal I think is to have the vu (?) meters on the AI to get to right before clip (red).
In my case I try to set the AI to be green (not turned up enough) to yellow (turned up to be right before clip).
If my vu meters get into the red (clip), I gotta turn something down. I can turn the amp down, or the AI down. I can also adj. gain level with the DAW. Up or Down.

Can you elaborate on this.
I’d have thought line ‘out’ would go to the AI?
Amp ‘in’? are you trying to get what’s in your DAW to playback through the amp?
For me, if I wanna hear what’s on my DAW I just playback through the speakers used with the AI. A stereo in my case. Generally, if I wanna hear what’s on my DAW it get’s played back via the headphone jack on the AI as I’m usually trying to play along with whats on the DAW and I don’t want what comes out of the speakers (amp in your case?) to be re-recorded while I’m trying to input another track with another instrument. Guitar, or vocals in my case.

fwiw, I could be off base here too. Sounds like your running your sound though cables? I generally live mic my recordings. Or, I plug my guitar or mic right into my AI. Point is, I don’t do line out of the amp to the AI. Personally, I get recordings I don’t like the tones of going that route. That’s likely me though.

Nothing wrong with that. That sometimes is how we learn.

Hope I was supposed to comment on this. Didn’t seem like a question, more like a statement?
I answered anyway.
Hope that was ok?
Another thing is I have no idea if what I said is really true. It’s just my observation for how I record. And I’m no recording pro by any sense of the word…

Good luck, I’m sure you’ll get it figured out in the end. If not, perhaps someone who is closer to a recording pro will chime in…

The aux input on amps often does not go to the line outputs (or to USB record if using that).

The idea is, if you are playing along to a backing track or drum loop from something connected to the aux input on the amp, you probably don’t want to be recording that; you want to record your guitar part and, if required, mix the backing track in later.

If you do want the backing track, the best approach is to have the backing track on another track in the DAW.

Cheers,

Noodling thoughts are sometines good and no harm in writing it out.

Where my system is concerned my setup may just be completely standard but when its all new , some things are just not transparent to you immediately lol.

right now I dont have the xlr cables (direct out) connected to line in 1 and 2, the two with the dials for clipping control but I suppose I should try that as my bd level in 3 and 4 are about -25db so normalising is not good on the recording. something for tomorrow

No, My amp has a line in for audio, so I can play music from the Musopia App directly through my amp now and it works great, but it doesn’t get to the DAW, thats what threw me. I’m guessing becasue of copyright issues, possibly. ! but I can also try something here too, I can also hook up my ipad directly to my Toneking Pre amp pedal , that might actually work, again something for tomorrow.

Hopefully get something recorded tomorrow now or very soon i hope.

yes, thats the bit i haddened expected lol, I’ve found the backing tracks all pre recorded which I can paste as wavefiles and play along to those, bit more hassle but, needs must

Thanks
