He made an interesting comment on soloing. B.B. King has said much the same thing:
“Oh, I’m in the moment when soloing. Practicing a solo ahead of time puts you in a position of being unable to reach it later. I don’t subscribe to that theory or that way of doing a solo. My solos have got to come straight out of me at the moment I’m doing them.”
Fair enough for that level of player, not that I’ve really got to soloing yet if I tried that I’d end up with something like DJ Khaled and the Bob Marley guitar!
Jo Bonamassa recently said the same sort of thing - his rehearsals now consist of checking the levels with the band and then leaving it alone, as practising stuff beforehand made him play in a way that was too mechanical.
