Roland Micro Cube

Hi All,

For anyone who has the Roland Micro Cube, I’d like to know if you can set the sound as beautiful as the one in this vid.

I bought the cube a few year back. By then I thought it is good as long as it produce sound. Now after I dig some videos, I am totaly disatified.

Maybe its go for Boss Katana :squinting_face_with_tongue:

Welcome to the community

That’s the ā€œBlack Panelā€ setting with a load of reverb.

Bear in mind a few things:

The Micro Cube is a small amp, with a small speaker. It’s always going to sound a bit thin and ā€œboxyā€ compared to a larger amp. It’s designed with quiet ā€œbedroomā€ playing in mind. In the video you linked, he is close-micing the amp to record it. This is probably going to sound better than hearing the amp ā€œin the roomā€ from a further distance away.

Also, there is a saying: ā€œtone is in the fingersā€. There’s some truth to this. Really good players can make any amp sound good.

Also, the type of guitar, pickups, etc. makes a difference. The guy in the video is playing a Les Paul with both of the humbucker pickups selected. If you are trying to get the same sort of thick tone with a Squier Strat, then you’re not going to with that amp.

Should you upgrade? Well the Micro Cube is a decent little bedroom practice amp, but a physically bigger amp, like a Katana, will sound better.

Cheers,

Keith

Thank your for the reply. How big the speaker will be consider big enough to have a warm tone.

Its time to test out the Boss amp.

There’s no specific size, and it will depend on what amp it is, how loud you run the amp, and in what space.

And some smaller amps use digital signal processing to sound fuller from smaller speakers and enclosures. The Yamaha THR series, for example.

The Micro Cube has a 5" speaker, which is pretty small, and has a small cabinet too.

I would aim for an 8 inch or above if you chose a more conventional amp.

Cheers,

Keith

Have you considered going to a music store and trying a few different amps. A music store will generally have a few different ones to try out. Perhaps ya can find one that suits your there.

Best I can tell, near everyone here on this forum has a katana, but me. But there must be something to it for so many to be so satisfied.
I’d suggest what I got but everyone here don’t like what I like and it gets shot down every time. So I won’t suggest anything other than the music store to find something that ā€˜you’ like. The choices you’ll have are near endless this day and age. Do lots of research. I’ve no doubt you’ll find something that will suit you.

Thank you for the reply. There are not many music store around but I will try as many as I can.
