At one point after the first couple of years of guitar I remember it actually started to feel less fun and more like a chore, because I think I was getting bogged down on music theory and some other parts of the learning process. So these days I do mainly just look for stuff to play for enjoyment and hope that is enough to prevent me from getting fretboard amnesia
