When I started to learn guitar in June 23, I picked up an old Vox VT50 amp combo for approx $50 . It’s a hybrid amp with a tube in the preamp and some nice amp models and effects (which I never use).
Anyway, I had to take it out of the cabinet to fix a broken power on/off switch and then decided not to put it back in but make a separate cabinet for fun.
It’s a fairly pointless exercise as it could have just gone back in with the speaker, and the new cabinet is way bigger than it needs to be, but I never did anything like that before.
Here’s the end result. It was a fun project and I’m happy how it turned out. There’s also a picture of it in my rig that I play when I’m at my house in France - amp, speaker and my modded Squier tele.
Before anyone mentions it, yes I am fully aware that the colour scheme (green/blue) is not traditional Vox colours. It wasn’t a project trying to recreate an authentic Vox amp.
This amp was a great buy. I have 2 Orange amps, but this one was both cheaper and sounds nicer (to me).
My next project is to build a vintage white Strat partscaster. Got the parts and hope to do it over Xmas.
What a cool project with a fantastic result!!! Wow!!! I’m very impressed!!! That sounds like a lot of fun creating a new “home” for the amp & it looks so good with the speaker cab!
Congrats!!!
Wow!!! You did a really great job.
Your work gave me the idea to make a new case for my Marshall CODE 25 which has one 10 inch speaker. It would be nice to move it to new, 2 x 12" cabinet…
@JackPK Even for someone with no wood working experience, it wasn’t too difficult. The only part I found difficult was cutting shapes out of the wood for the control panel and back panel of the amp, as it wasn’t just a standard rectangle. The back panel doesn’t look as professional because of that. But it was a lot of fun. See photo.
Actually I’m now thinking of getting a nice celestion 12” speaker as I expect the one in my Vox is not a very high quality speaker. It’s just the stock one in the combo. I read that different speaker brands can make a big difference to the sound. I don’t have enough experience to know. This is the only 12” guitar speaker I have tried.
Well I have to say that I did actually consider making a new cab with a celestion 12" in it, just so I get a nice looking custom look cool cabinet. TBH it’s difficult to justify when you can buy an already assembled Harley Benton cab with a 12" Celestion (greenback or cream back - can’t remember which) for a fraction more than just buying the speaker itself.
I like it Ian nice job it is good to see people working on projects I love it myself I build speaker trolleys with 15degree tilt, wheels and storage underneath and on top simple job and worth the time £200 + if I was to buy from somewhere so good on you mate cheers Hec
Can’t go wrong with the HB cab with the 12” Celestion cream-back, it’s a great option. I was going to build my own but have decided to go down the HB route; my Bass Amp has a 1x12” Celestion speaker and I’ve tried my Bugera tube amp through it, sounds pretty decent but I don’t want to mod the amp to be able to do that permanently, so I have to wait until Santa brings me one
