She (original song and music video)

Hey Everyone,

I have something fun to share today. As many of you know, I have spent a large percentage of my guitar learning journey working with others on original music.

Occasionally, I will write something that isn’t a good fit for either of my bands, or just feels like it needs to stay with me. So please enjoy “She”- my first solo song  (and music video!)

Don’t worry, my solo career will likely be short lived  But in the meantime, please enjoy what will be the first of a few solo songs I record. Dan kindly provided me with drums and filmed/edited the video. All guitar parts were written and performed by me.

I won’t say a ton about the song, I’ll let her speak for herself  But I will say that I definitely have developed a style over the course of my songwriting. A lot of times I feel like I need to push the envelope and try something new. For this song, I just embraced what I love about my signature style and leaned into it. Is it perfect? No, but I’ve always embraced that imperfection. Full lyrics below for those that like to read them.

Hope you enjoy!

CONTENT WARNING: this song contains mild foul language in case that bothers anyone.

She lyrics

(Intro)

She is a slut and I hate her
I don’t know shit about her
But I know she’s a slut

(Verse 1)

She plays the part so perfectly
A puppeteer with her string

She took everything from me
With a wave of her hand

(Chorus)

And when she moves in for the kill
This rage breaks the surface

Does she know
That I’m the missing corner piece
In your puzzle

Or is she just the end
of my sanity

(Verse 2)

Is she the poisonous flower
In your pretty, pretty garden

All this unexpected devastation
With a wave of her hand

(Chorus)

And when she moves in for the kill
This rage breaks the surface

Does she know
That I’m the missing corner piece
In your puzzle

Or is she just the end
of my sanity

With a wave of her hand

(Bridge)

She is a slut and I hate her

I don’t give a shit

(Chorus)

And when she moves in for the kill
This rage breaks the surface

Does she know
That I’m the missing corner piece
In your puzzle

Or is she just the end

And when she moves in for the kill
This rage breaks the surface

Does she know
That I’m the missing corner piece
In your puzzle

Or is she just the end
of my sanity

(Outro)

She is a
She is
And I don’t give a shit

There’s something almost hypnotic about the energy and movement in this song. There are a couple of really good hooks in the guitar pattern. Similarly the venomous snarl in the lyric is bewitching somehow. Like a really angry Patti Smith (or Nick Cave) song. Very enjoyable!

Excellent Jen. I love a good rock song. I know I am repeating myself from an earlier post of yours where I dropped a comment, but I do think you sound like a mix of both Joan Jett and Pat Benatar.

That was fun, Jenn. Well played and sung, a real performance. I was getting some GnR vibes at times.

And must tip the hat to Dan. You guys can have a career in making music videos for amateur bands and artists for YouTube.

Must say I agree with @Eddie_09 on the association with Joan Jett, Pat Benatar. Can add some Debbie Harry vibes as well.

Well done, Jenn, I really enjoyed it. Great energy. I liked the solo. It feels a bit simplistic, but repetitions work great, and it nicely builds from low to high. Maybe you could try finding a stronger thread line and work around that?

Slick and well produced again Jennifer. You’ve definitely developed a style, and I notice it in the arrangement of your songs - the build, the pause, then go again.

Nice solo too - sounded good.

Thank you! I’m always down for the chance to do a good snarler

Thanks Eddie! I love both of them (in case you couldn’t tell ) so that’s a huge compliment!

Thank you Molly, that is very kind of you  We will see how it goes!

Thanks David! He’s a magician with the video editing (much better that me ) and his drums really helped propel the song forward.

Thank you! I think so too

Thank you so much Rogier! :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you for the feedback Boris! I completely agree with you on this. Writing lead is the hardest part of the process for me. At my core, I’m definitely at home playing rhythm- it’s where my heart is, but I like to push myself. This was definitely not my favorite solo I’ve written, but after listening to it a few times, it grew on me  I may still keep messing with it.

I’ve been super fortunate to have worked with both Greg (in DyeV) and @nzmetal who are both stellar lead guitarists and I am constantly in awe of both of their skills.

@Silvia80 @Ontime @mathsjunky Thank you all so much for checking it out! I’m glad you enjoyed it

Thank you JK! Yep, that pause/build momentum you describe is definitely something I like to do. Glad you picked up on it!

Thanks Brian! We seem to never be able to do anything unless we give our 100%

Thank you so much Phil! What an amazing compliment!

Hey everyone! Thanks for watching and giving feedback! I admit it threw my brain off when Jennifer said this was a solo song. I’m so used to working on things for CounterPlot or DYEV, that Jennifer just writing her own song felt like a foreign concept. It was a refreshing reminder that sometimes there isn’t a grand plan. There doesn’t need to be a place where expression ‘fits’. It can just be about making and playing music. It also reminded me why I started playing drums in earnest. I didn’t start playing to be ‘a band member’, I started playing to support Jennifer’s guitar journey. That journey has and will take many forms. It’s a cool thing to experience. And it helps that it rocks! :fire:

Agreed @MollyT. We’ll play with the bands, but there’s no way Jennifer’s not doing some of her own thing too.

Thank you @DavidP. That would be a lot of fun! It’s actually crossed my mind several times. If I had seed money and confidence that we could survive doing that, I would jump at the opportunity.

Thank you @roger_holland!

Awe, gee… Thank you.

Keep the dream, have faith, Jenn. Perhaps start as a side-hustle and who knows.
