Hi
I’m 54, never played a guitar before (played tuba until I was 16) and decided I needed a ‘brain’ hobby.
I told my wife I’d like a guitar and she just offered me a death stare. She went on holiday yesterday so my guitar turns up today (good ol’ next day delivery)!
Just hoping I can get a sound out of it within the next week so I can soften the blow with “Look - progress!” on her return!
Welcome Sik! I’m curious - did you go with an acoustic or electric guitar? Whichever you selected, just be sure to stick Justin’s lessons from the start. You’ll be getting good sounds out of your guitar immediately!
Hi Sik,
I can relate to your “being in trouble”
If you got an electric, at least you can also practice quietly if wanted and no one will hear you…
So you probably got an amp too, or a headphone amp or something like that?
Wishing you fun with the lessons and hope you’ll find something easy that you could play on her return!
Justin got a searchable song lesson section, so you can only look for songs in grade 1, for example and also with the chords you choose (select those you can already or will soon be able to play)
Cheers, Dominique
Hello Sik & welcome!!!
Good advice already offered above, stick with the lessons, put in the practice & you’ll be playing songs in no time!
I’m a firm believer in having a stand… if it’s easy to pick up, you’ll find yourself playing/practicing when you find a few minutes available. I play while the coffee’s brewing or when my wife gives me a “be right out, love”!!!
Those extra few minutes here & there add up, you can use them to help with whatever has been causing you difficulties or play through a song… good luck with your new Journey!!!
Hello Sik.
Welcome to JustinGuitar and this fantastic community. Please take your time to look around and get to know the wider space. View by Categories.
We are a supportive and encouraging group of students and guitarists from across the world. Essentially, we are all here for music and to improve as players. We truly are a ‘community’. Members help and support one another and a friendly, positive attitude underpins this. We hope that all - young or old, experienced or new players - adopt and foster the pay-it-forward ethos that Justin personifies and embedded all those years ago when he started the website and forum.
Also, please make sure to read the Community Etiquette announcement for some important information and guidance.
If you want to record yourself to show your progress and / or seek feedback there is our ever popular Community Recordings section.
Behind the scenes there is a small and dedicated team who work to make the JustinGuitar experience as good as it can be. Check out the Onboarding sessions provided by Fanny. Justin also has a small group of Approved Teachers he recommends for people wanting 1-to-1 lessons to supplement his courses - of which I am privileged to be one.
That is plenty to be going on with. It is a vast community space so if you need help as you find your way around just ask.
Cheers. Richard
