Hey there. I’m getting stuck into this lesson; it’s a cool arrangement. My question is, whats the point of the leaving your middle finger out when playing this? It feels unconventional, but is there a bigger picture I’m missing? Thanks!

Glad to hear you’re enjoying this arrangement.

Good question. Are you referring to the 6th intervals? Would you prefer to pick them with your index and middle finger? Or maybe thumb and middle finger?

For this arrangement, we try to dedicate one finger per string for each section, to minimise moving our fingers between strings. The thumb should not be used to pick the lowest note of the 6th intervals. The thumb should be free and available to pick the root notes. That means the lowest note of the 6th intervals should be picked with the index finger. The highest note of the 6th intervals should be picked with the ring finger.

This is the most logical and comfortable way to pick those strings (for most people). I guess you could pick the 6th intervals with your index and middle fingers but that would create an awkward stretch between your fingers, which most people would avoid.

Thanks allot for your response Dave, much appreciated. Yeah I was referring to the 6th intervals. I understand the idea about one finger per string, it just seemed odd to me that the middle finger was omitted altogether. It seemed more intuitive to use the index and middle. I thought it might be part of a bigger strategy in the ‘primer lesson’ for freeing up the middle finger for a use in the more complex version in the main lesson. Rich

I don’t think it’s part of a bigger strategy in this particular case. I think it’s just more to do with what’s most comfortable and common for most people. If you prefer picking the 6ths with your index and middle fingers, that should be fine. :+1:
