Happened to be watching an old episode of the BBC programme Top Gear last night and as it is is shown in over 200 countries I presume you will be aware of it.
Anyway they had Slash on in a “reasonable priced car” but I thought you might be interested how the show ended.

What is the secret ingredient for Slash playing? 
Mostly the Major and minor pentatonic scales with some chord tones thrown in and years of practice.

Can’t answer the scale question but the there is a tab for the song in Ultimate Guitar

It starts off with a Amajor arpeggio into the A major scale. Then switches to A Dorian and A Mixolydian and finishes off in D major Pentatonic. But you don’t need to know any of this to play it.
If you just want to jam to the backing track you can get away with the A major and A pentatonic scales.
I learned A major Pentatonic pattern one feels good
