Slight discomfort with right shoulder

I’m 6 months novice. Working on strumming
I’m finding when I’m strumming my right shoulder can be uncomfortable. Not a sharp pain but a little discomfort. Is this just par for the course or poor technique
Thanks

A couple of questions for you…

What type of guitar?
Do you play seated or standing?
If seated, what are you sat on when playing? Do you use a strap?

Really it shouldn’t be uncomfortable but if you play with bad posture or have a guitar that’s too big for you then it can be uncomfortable

Hey Conor,

Film yourself mate, and see what your overall posture looks like, and particularly the shoulders.

You could be cocking your shoulders, twisting etc, causing continual tension etc.

Cheers, Shane

It’s not par for the course. My guess is it’s a posture thing but that’s only a guess without a video to see.

Posture problem or possibly just too tense. Try to relax.

Hey Conor78, probably combination of posture and relaxing. Slow the pace a bit and see if that helps with the discomfort. I also at times use a 6" high footstool I made out of scrap wood. A few pillows will work too. It seems to alleviate lower back pain for me and helps relax my whole body when I’m playing. Record yourself to see if you’re smiling. That’s a good indicator for me if I’m enjoying it or working at it. I can also check my posture and see if I’m sitting upright, relaxed, or leaning to one side a bit. Possibly try raising or lowering your guitar via the strap too. See where your hand and arm want to go naturally while sitting in your chair, without the guitar, then with the guitar to see if the position matches. Then adjust the guitar to equal that natural position. Keep us posted on how anything you try works or not. Yours is not an unusual or unique issue. I’ve seen it posted here before.
