I think the “How to Play” section that describes the hammer-on technique has things mixed up. The current description says:

  1. While the third finger is down in the sixth fret, your first finger will be hammering.
  2. Then, you’ll want to flick very quickly.
  3. You’ll follow that by a hammer another flick off again.
  4. Angle your fingers to help you do this.

I believe it should say:

  1. While the first finger is down on the fourth fret, your third finger will be hammering on the 6th fret on the 4th string.
  2. Then you’ll want to flick off very quickly,
  3. Then you’ll return your third finger to the 6th fret on the 5th string to be ready to play that note.
  4. Angle your fingers to help you do this.

Thank you!!! I have wanted to learn this riff FOREVER!

First thanks again, Jason for this wonderful lesson!!!..I am no John Frusciante by a long shot but in starting to learn this riff I found myself naturally sliding my ring finger up the two frets to play the 4th strain in the riff…maybe that is why John fingers it that way instead of using his little finger?..just a thought.

Hi, I am having trouble with the B chord shown, specifically getting my thumb to play the 6th string. I just do not have the stretch. Is there a way around this?

Thanks!

You can either play regular E shaped barre chords or learn the thumb over technique. It’s not about strength it all in the technique. It’s not easy but doable. It helps to have big hands but not a given. I can’t get my hand as far over as Justin does but can still do it. Personally I don’t use this technique very often. This may help

I tend to use an E shape with 6th string root or a A shape with 5th string root

Yup, I am going to have to do that, I just do not have the stretch

Hi David, It is all good advice above cheers Hec
