Song Riptide - strumming pattern and capo use

Hi everyone,

I have a question about the song Riptide by Vance Joy. Why is mentioned under strumming pattern in the app that it is down strums on the beat only, as the original is down down up down up. Also the capo on the first fret is not mentioned. It makes it hard for me to practice as the songs in the app aren’t sounding as the originals. Can someone explain please? Thank you

Hi Krisztina, and welcome here to the community, without looking I can’t answer your question, but somebody will soon. However, it may be better to go to the Introduce Yourself category, there will be a lot of help there cheers Hec

Hi @Liveeverysecond1! The app is mostly targeted at beginners, and thus offers mostly simplified versions of the songs. Therefore the suggested strumming pattern doesn’t always correspond to the pattern of the original. Mind you, it’s only a suggestion, so feel free to play any strumming pattern you like!

As for the capo: the backing tracks in the song app are sometimes pitch corrected to be able to simplify the chords. In that case, your playing will sound ok as long as you play with the app, but not with the original song.

Yeah, this for sure. I have never used the app but Lady of the castle hit it right on the head. This is a good song for singing and playing too.

Oh also right after the bridge there is that short section where Vance does go to a single strum per bar just for that nice change of inflection and mood. Maybe check out the website lesson.

Good luck
