Songs For Module 5

There is some rough guidance on a suggested strumming pattern in the app…read this topic:

Some songs have specific strumming patterns. If Justin has a lesson on the song that you’re learning then its worth checking them out starting off with the basic pattern he teaches in the song lesson.

Just looking back at the content of Module 5 and one lesson sticks out to me which is all about exploring strumming. By this module you would have learned the basics of 8th note strumming. So if there is no song lesson then you could use the songs on the app to revisit the strumming patterns taught in the course so far as well as explore new ones. The lesson posted above by @stitch is very good. A good exercise is to put the song on, mute the strings and strum along feeling the rhythm. Remember if it sounds good its good, if it sounds rubbish then just don’t use that strumming pattern for that specific song.

Okay, so I have both this web course, and over the black friday sale, I also purchased the app. I see that we have Pearl Jam Black in the list for practice, but I cannot find it in the app? I like that the app allows me to slow the song down so that I can keep up and get more accurate. Has that song been removed from the app? The only PJ song in there is Last Kiss.

@ddrolet Hi Dean, most of the website lesson were developed before the app was available so the songs listed on the website ate not always available in the app
The lessons on the app usually shows songs for each module that are on the app
If you want to practice Black by Pearl Jam in the website song lesson, you can use settings (gear icon) on lower right of screen to change the speed to 3/4 or 1/2 speed

Hi all, first post here. I am using the app and learning Eleanor Rigby, as Justin suggested I am trying to nail this before moving on to the next course. The app at 100% is 137bpm, the strumming is really fast to hit every beat and I am struggling to make the Em to C change at 137bpm. At 70% (96bpm) I am making the change, should I persist to nail it at 100% ?

Watching the Youtube video of Justin playing the song it doesnt appear he is strumming 137bpm?

For reference my 1min changes from C to Em are around 35.
I would appreciate some feedback…
thanks…
Gus

Hi @gus_sap (Is your name really Justin S?! If so, what a lovely coincidence! ) Everyone is different, but I’ll share my thoughts as a Grade 3 beginner.

For me, it’s more important to get those changes and rhythms correct than to play a song at the original tempo. If I stayed with something until I could play with the original or play “really well (again, I’m speaking as a beginner being introduced to chords and/or techniques for the first time) I’d never progress.

So, my approach is to stick with something until my progress stalls. Then I set the thing aside, and return to it later. If it’s a song or technique I’m really enjoying (or if it’s something I’m just not really getting) I come back to it after a week or two. If it’s something that’s not especially interesting to me, I’ll set it aside sometimes for months, or until I start working on a song that requires the chord or technique. A real-world example for me: I’m really bad at palm muting (Grade 2), and worked on it for probably a month with little progress. Later I started learning a song that required palm muting and now have inspiration to work on it. I’m still pretty bad, but my “practice” is in the context of something I enjoy and I’m slowly improving. In the meantime, I’m learning many other chords and techniques.

I realize this doesn’t directly address your questions, but I hope it provides some general thoughts that make some sense!

Thanks Judi, I appreciate your feedback.
Yes another Justin, from Australia as well.

Your message is reassuring, I am going to stick with the C chord a bit longer as I have struggled with it more than the others.

Other users have mentioned that most songs with a C chord also feature a G chord, so I’d like to recommend Justin’s lesson on Love Again by Dua Lipa. It’s a great song that can be played with only C, D, Am and Em (no G chord) and Justin’s lesson is pitched towards beginners at this stage. Given that Get Lucky is not currently available as a lesson, I’d suggest that this song lesson be added to the list of songs for Module 5.

@anthony_g Anthony, you can make that request here: https://www.justinguitar.com/songs#requests-board

@DavidP, it’s not a request (@anthony_g added a link to Justin’s lesson for the song), it’s a suggestion to add the song to the list of songs for module 5.

Hi David, I’ve edited my post to make it a bit clearer for the sleep (or caffeine) deprived.
Thanks also, @LadyOfTheCastle

Hi Fanny,

I “liked” your comment when you posted last week but I’ll also add that it’s quite gratifying to see the lesson content updated with my suggestion.

It occurred to me that, for consistency, it would be good if the Spotify playlist for this lesson is also updated to include this song. This would make it easier for Spotify users to listen to the original. Hoping I don’t come across as a nag; I’m not even a Spotify user (Apple Music pays artists more than Spotify).
