Thanks LB! What’s funny is that we were actually working on Barracuda before we started writing our own songs I think I actually have a vocal track recorded and Jeff had recorded the lead guitar.
Barracuda was actually the song that inspired me to pick up the guitar to begin with. I had my guitar for approximately 48ish hours when I started trying to figure out how to play power chords so I could learn it
All of us want to revisit it at some point. I think if we hit a creative plateau we will probably fill the time with some covers Barracuda is definitely at the top of that list
Thanks Andrea! We are definitely on a roll right now! Creativity definitely ebbs and flows and I know at some point, we may hit an ebb but for right now we are riding the wave!
As any of my band mates can attest to, I tend to already have ideas lined up for new songs before we finish the one we are working on That way they are parked and ready to go when we have time to get to them
Thank you. I felt the same. I think that’s part of what makes this video so special to us. Since we can’t easily play with each other in person, it was really cool seeing Dan’s initial edit of the footage with the three of us playing “together” I can’t speak for the guys, but it actually almost made me kind of emotional. I think we all hold out hope that one day the stars will align and we will find ourselves in the same place at the same time time But for now, this is a good close second
Thank you and yes, they definitely can! That’s one of the things that I think is really cool about our partnership. Everyone holds their own and brings something different and unique to the table. It’s not always easy to keep up with me But each of the guys does it in their own way
Dan can probably give you more specific info, but he used a mirror effect and flipped the mirrored image upside down so that it looked like shadows. It ended up looking so good! There were times in the video where I walked over towards Jeff’s side and Dan would have to adjust where the mirrored image was. Although, those parts didn’t end up making it into the final edit. Maybe next time!
Thanks Gordon! I think we agree While I’m glad we did the more theatrical stuff (it was a great learning experience) We all really liked the result here. We still got to add a “story” with a little less of the over the top production
Thanks Tod and we agree We absolutely loved how this one turned out, so don’t be surprised if the full band is featured more prominently in future videos
Thank you so much Craig! I’m so glad you enjoyed it. I’ll be sure to send some of my power chord mojo your way
@BigLuc@RobDickinson Thank you both for checking it out and we are so glad you enjoyed it!
Hey Andrea! (@Helen0609) Jennifer already commented on the shadows, but I can give a little more detail (and based on the length of my response prove why Jennifer responds more than me!). I used DaVinci Resolve for the video editing, and there is an FX called “Mirrors” that I used. Basically I used the effect to flip @Jenndye429 and @nzmetal over, and adjusted the positioning of the effect to align with the bottom of their feet. I got the idea from when I used to make product merchandising photos for a cookware company that I worked at. I used to do drop shadows, then one day I saw an Apple ad where the product had a reflective/mirror effect, as if the product was sitting on a reflective surface, and I played around with Photoshop to figure out how to make that effect. So it’s something I’ve used in product image production a couple of times. When I placed us on the stage background we used, the lighting and surface felt like they would work with a reflective shadow, so I figured out which video effect would do that (and found the Mirrors) effect. (If I didn’t find an effect I was going to duplicate the footage and transform it to flip it and position it). Once the effect was in place I did a couple of things to polish it up:
Cutting off the Shadows: The stage is slightly visible at the bottom of the frame in most of the shots, and is more in-frame during the far-away shots when the director and director’s assistant are in front of the stage. To cut off the shadows, I duplicated the stage, and cropped it, then set the stage above the layer with the shadows.
Positioning: Don’t look too closely (because once you see it, you see it!), but because the mirrored images are at a fixed position, when Jennifer or Jeff’s feet move, the alignment with the shadow gets a little funky. I adjusted the position between cuts, and tried to cut the video to limit the amount of times that they’re either ‘floating’ or losing portions of their feet, but there are some ‘moments’ . If I had taken a long time I could have shifted the mirror effect frame by frame to make it super-clean, but we wanted to get the video out this year.
Color Adjusting: Initially Jennifer’s shadow was too bright (Her pants are a light blue, and the mirror effect is just a reflection without any color adjustments), so to make her shadow look more like a shadow, I layered her video twice, and added the mirror effect and color adjustments just to the lower layer so that the reflection looked darker. Another thing I thought of doing was applying a gradient mask, but after the color adjustments, I didn’t think that was necessary.
There you go, probably a lot more information then you were looking for.
Glad you enjoyed it! I appreciate all of the feedback and support from the community. I can’t speak for Jeff and Jennifer, but sharing these projects with the community is part of what makes doing them so rewarding. So, thank you all!
Wow, Dan, thanks for your super detailed response!
Thanks for the insight into your creative processes, apart from the music, I find that to be really interesting. This must have been a lot of “work”! The shadows were a nice detail to add, I first saw the vid only on my mobile’s screen and didn’t notice them. At a second and third run through it immediately catched me, how good that was.
I’m imensly impressed, how much you all go into detail. Settings, costumes, make-up, all the little details in the scenes. It shows the dedication and passion and adds a lot to the overall professionalism.
Thanks again! Wish you loads of fun with your upcoming projects!
Watched this a few times yesterday evening but under the Grimbergen influence so decided to wait a day before posting, in case I was a little too giddy - it was that good ! So spun it up again a couple of times today and can’t get enough. Going from strength to strength.
Slick clever video (sack that director ) really great that you have fused the 3 of you together and synced the playing really well in the video, impressive stuff and no doubt not an easy task.
Good to see you all in a “vanilla” perspective out of the role playing and therefore I’d agree this would make a stonking entry track. I’m sure Jeff still had the urge to dust down the bondage gear but no need this time ! I’d say I’m stoked but this old man still ain’t sure what that means !
So on to the song I guess ? Loved the intro and build up of tension and bang ! Straight into some in yer face hard rock. Great powerful driving riff powering through, high energy performance and a catchy solid motif pushing things along. Loved the musicality, up close and in yer face. Everyone performing on point and so much energy. Walked through the lyric a few times and the content and vibe work together seamlessly.
This little number crops up on one of my running playlist and Speed Control very much reminds me of it. I hope that is a compliment
Thank you so much Toby for giving it such a thorough and thoughtful watch/listen! We always appreciate your reviews
The three of us had to avoid making the whole video 4 minutes of the director We all loved Dan’s rendition so much
No bondage gear this time Although he almost ended up with a few extra accessories that unfortunately weren’t going to make it in time for filming. Maybe the next one!
You absolutely can say stoked! It works for you
Thank you so much! That’s exactly the vibe we were going for, so I’m glad it worked!
What a punchy tune! This will be a great opener, because the song is like “in your face”!
I thoroughly enjoyed this one and I’m quite relieved you also come up with less dark stuff. An overall great production and all layers are delivered on point. There was some great lead work done by Jeff, it quite sticks around in my head for a while after listening. Jenn, your vocal performance was top notch, somehow a little “dirtier” or with a little more grit, maybe. I really liked it and it fits the song perfectly. Dan on the drums was pushing the song forward unforgivingly.
I really loved the video. Toning the effects down, but upping the storytelling and showing you perform as a band was brilliant! But even the sequences in between were adorable and really funny at times. I probably never was more fascinated watching someone eat something.
Thanks for checking it out Lisa! I’m sure you have your hands full with baby Vincent, but I hope you both have been able to get some rest
Every once in a while we do I can’t guarantee the dark stuff won’t come back at some point
Thank you so much!! I love adding a little bit of “dirt” to my vocals so any time I see the chance to do it, I take it I also agree that somehow, Jeff’s lead work gets stuck in my head for a while when I listen to this one We all had a ton of fun working on it
Thank you! I think @nzmetal@DDye and I probably would have been perfectly fine having the video be 4 minutes of Dan eating the sandwich I was filming him when he did it and I was having a hard time not laughing out loud The three of us watched the footage together shortly after everyone finished filming and we were all cracking up
