Starting again - Hal, 70, southern Florida

My wife bought me an acoustic guitar many years ago, I forgot the brand. I never did much with it because I had trouble with forming chords. I used it when I took an Adult Ed Guitar course about 5 years ago. The instructor told me the face was warped from being stored for many years without being played and the neck was very wide. I also wasn’t too happy about the course as the instructor taught us, while he used a banjo. With my wife’s agreement, I sold the guitar and bought a Taylor GS-Mini (on sale). I don’t seem to have the issues I had with the older one. Also, a major music store chain was moving its sales department from being very local to me to just a bit further away. They didn’t want to move everything so they had a fire sale. I ended up with a Squier '60s Vintage eletric guitar, a Squier Bass VI, a Kahala Baritone Uke and almost completed my harmonica collection of one in every key. I’m only missing F#. I had taught myself to play the harmonica in my teen years. While in Ireland I got to appreciate the Irish Whistle (tin whistle, penny whistle). I have one each in D and low D. I have watched Justinguitar on and off for about three years. I was going to take a local one on one but they never got back to me. So I decided to give this a try. I already finished the first non-playing module.

Welcome to the community, Hal :slightly_smiling_face:

Your instructor playing a banjo while teaching how to play the guitar sounds odd at least. I at least would throw my in person guitar teacher one or two strange looks if he would be sitting opposite of me with a banjo next Monday instead of a semi-hollow or strat

Sounds like a great deal that you got from the music store changing location. Which of your many new instruments do you like playing most?

The Taylor GS-Mini. It sounds good, it’s light and I can just pick it up and play it. The baritone uke for the same reason, although I’m more interested in guitar. I have the guitars and the uke in stands in the living room. To play the electrics I have to get the amp, the Boss MS-25 (both bought during the fire sale) and all the cables and then set everything up. They’re fun but they aren’t “pick up and play”. They’re also heavier. Since buying them I have developed back issues and I play sitting down, which helps with the weight issue.

Welcome to the community Hal @Hal2001! Sounds like you have a fun collection of instruments. Hope to hear from you as your journey continues.

I remember when I decided I wanted an electric guitar…my brother-in-law offered to let me try out some from his collection. I’d never held one before, and was shocked at how heavy they are! I’d had my heart set on a Les Paul style, but that quickly changed!

Hi Hal, welcome to the community forum. I also have a GS-mini acoustic that I always carry with me when I go on vacation since they travel well and fun to play. I think you will get a chance to use both your acoustic and electric guitars as you follow Justin’s lessons. Have fun.

Hi Harold
It’s great you’re giving it another go.
It was a bit rude that instructor saying “you’re face was warped and you had a fat neck” .:joy::joy:You won’t be getting those insults from Justin.
Sounds like you’re setting up your own music shop.
Hope your adventure continues well.
All the best Ken

Welcome to the Community Hal…sure you have fun with all those instruments!

I didn’t take what he said as an insult. The guitar was warped and then neck of the guitar was too fat for my hand. I’m trying very hard to stop buying more instruments and just play what I have. My low D Irish whistle arrived two days ago. It sounds deeper than my D whistle and requires a bigger hand stretch. I think that might help playing some guitar chords. I’ve managed to (so far) avoid getting an Irish D flute (same fingering as D whistle).

Hi Hal,

Greetings and welcome Hal!
Glad you are here. It sounds like you have a real appreciation for music. You’ve played so many instruments!
It’s always good to meet another senior artist.
I find the structure of the modules really helpful. I have a tendency to rush ahead which, ironically tends to slow me down. Stay the course and I’m sure you’ll progress quickly!
