Steve Hackett: Spectral Mornings (cover)

The first “real” concert I ever went to was Steve Hackett’s Spectral Mornings tour back in the late 70s, so this tune has a special significance for me. It was another chance to play my sustainiac guitar, so I couldn’t resist :rofl:

Awesome in every aspect. No other word for it… Sincere congrats.

Very cool to see how you recorded the guitar, piano, and drum kit as separate layers and then put them back together in post.

How did you get the timing to line up? Are you listening to a metronome while recording via the headphones?

so cool :open_mouth:

When I grow up I want to be Twistor

That was really amazing. What great playing and fantastic recording. Thanks for posting!

Yet another truly amazing production, a standing ovation from a fellow proggy.

I actually saw Steve Hackett when he was still in Genesis, an awesome guitarist and have at least 5 of his albums.

Great recording thanks

Phil

As ever some fine musicianship and not just the guitar. The piece itself, for me, was not as good as others you have played: the parts do not seem to gel with each other and long stretched sounded like instruments playing alone at the same time rather than a convincing ensemble.

Brian

@Coda @mukramesh @GrumpyMac @Prof_Thunder @Socio @AJSki2fly @beejay56 Thank you for indulging a prog dinosaur folks!

What I generally do is import the track I want to base things off into the Reaper DAW, then use that to record the drums over. I then use my drum track as the basis for adding the other instruments.

Yes, the guitar was the only instrument I recorded straight through in one track. One problem I have is that I can’t really play the drums, so I record them in pieces and paste them together. Small timing issues inevitably creep in and it compounds from there. Sometimes it works better than others!

Really nice cover! Great playing, and the tone is awesome - really sounds like Hackett

Awesome, Man! :open_mouth: :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:
I just clicked upload on my latest family & friends collab, and then see Phil has produced another progrock solo special- Like the Little Red Hen, doing everything himself… and to what a standard. It makes me wonder why I bother :rofl:
My only consolation is that like much jazz and classical music, most prog just goes over my head, so keeping it simple still makes me smile :grinning_face_with_big_eyes:

Be careful…
I tried that and just became twisted! :roll_eyes: :rofl:

Fab stuff Phil - As ever prog rock isn’t my thing, but it’s most definitely your thing!

4:37 - volume pedal? Was looking for volume control twiddling but saw none.

Good one Phil. Not familiar with the song. Enjoyed the whole though. Thanks for sharing.

@dfrazz Thanks David -

Steve Hackett uses his Fernandez Les Paul fitted with the Fernandez sustainer. I’m using the Sustainiac to do a similar thing.

@brianlarsen

But you create stuff Brian!

@mathsjunky @Malz Cheers guys!

Yes - I always dread using the volume pedal because my balance is terrible! I never got the hang of wrapping a pinky round the volume knob :rofl:

Great production as usual Phil. You make it all look so easy!

cheers John!

Been saving this for a metaphoric rainy day. Hackett epitomises those early Genesis days with PG before Collins turned them into a pop band. Epic prog rock Phil !!
That sustainomatic just sings and looks effortless but I am sure there is a lot of paddling going on under the water. But that tone was to die for, top notch. Keys were interesting with both hands - contra to your comments a few days back on the other channel - digits dancing as usual ! Did you switch key voicing as I was getting some “churchy” organ sounds in parts but switched to more “rock” voices but could be my ears. Quick glimpse of the up graded percussion tools was a nice addition but no Bass ?? What a let down ! I mean come on Phil make a freakin effort man it’s a bit light when you only play keys percussion and geetar !! Time to step it up and go full ensemble !

Joking apart that was a delightful end to my day and brought back many happy memories of a super player that was Mr H. Top job sir !

Thank you Toby!

Agreed, “Hackett era” is my favourite Genesis period

Yes, but as I’m using VSTs for all the keyboard sounds, it was easier just to record the two voices separately. I’m sure it’s possible to set up Reaper to interpret the midi signal from a button press on the keyboard as an instruction to change patch, but I couldn’t be bothered to investigate!

I was playing bass but didn’t bother videoing it as I was just playing a few root notes :rofl:

I have no constructive feedback. I just put my headphones on, crancked it up and listened.

Amazing as always.

Thank you.

Dude - OUTSTANDING! To play all that on your own is amazing! Just one part would have been great but to do them all is super :slight_smile: love the sustainiac too! huge congrats!
