My wife and I went to the Sting/Billy Joel concert on Saturday. Both of them were amazing with Billy playing a solid two hour set. Anyway, aside from Sting being in incredible shape for a 73 year old, I noticed that both he and his guitar player played the same instrument for the entire set. This is the first major act, other than BB King with Lucile, that doesn’t swap guitars/basses for various songs. And both Sting’s base and his guitar player’s strat appear to be well traveled based on their patina.
Yeah, I was thinking about my post overnight and think that Buddy Guy used the same guitar for his entire concert. That being said, Sting is not a Blues player. Through the effects, be it a pedal or the sound engineer, they did get some interesting sounds on a few songs
I’ve been to a LOT of shows where the guitarist stays with one instrument. Billy Strings played the same guitar for the whole show on Thursday (though he’s got some clever circuitry to make it sound like a different one with the flip of a switch). Buckethead didn’t switch guitars. But also a fair few where they switch. There was some guitar switching at the Christmas Jam show I saw last year (Warren Haynes, Clutch, Slash, Billy Gibbons) Just depends.
