Stuttering video on my new Windows 11 PC - any help?

I have bought my self a new win11 pc as my win10 was quite old and very slow.

The pc is good and fast but the main issue is that all videos (JG and YT) stutter on playback. I have checked the drivers and they are the latest. The graphics are Intel onboard as my old pc which had no issues.

Any ideas how to resolve this?

Do you have video files on your local drive that can be used to check playback with network and internet out the picture, Stuart.

If that works then maybe the issue is somehow related to your network connectivity. But I am no expert.

Apologies if this is an obvious suggestion, but have you checked the manufacturer website for firmware/bios updates for the laptop? I’m not talking about Windows updates (although those should be done also) but that’s where I’d start. I own a Dell laptop and that has had several BIOS updates since I got it.

For reference my Internet download speed is probably only about 20% of yours and I get no stuttering on any of my devices

Stuart, have you tried different browsers already? If so, which ones? Maybe those need an update or there’s a plug-in missing, but it’s only guessing on my end.

Speed should be more than sufficient and any new piece of hardware should be just fine.

@Majik Keith, if you are around, perhaps you can make some suggestions here?

I’m probably not much help here. I rarely use Windows.

The suggestions given about video drivers would be my first port of call. Also, some indication of the specs might help identify a potential issue.

But if it’s a new PC. I would also consider contacting the vendor and asking for help.

Good advice on upgrading drivers.
A new machine should not give anything but stellar performance on something as simple as playing a video.

This is getting way, way nerdy here:

Hardware, software, or internet issues?
If the problem goes away when you’re playing a video from your hard drive, then it is most likely your internet connection.

Upload/Download priority
At my house the router (the box that turns the internet coming into your house into an internet connection you can use) has software settings where you can set precedence on upload/download channels. As it was installed by my ISP, it strongly favored the upload, to the detriment of the download speeds. This means that if there is anyone else (or you) in the house uploading, it clobbers download speed.

QOS
With my router software, I was able to fiddle with the settings and change the upload/download priorities, and downloads worked better after that (I was also messing around with other settings and temporarily disabled my internet connection :woman_facepalming: Caveat fiddler)

Busy Pipeline?
Are you sole user of your broadband, or sharing with other members in your place?

Does it stutter always, or at certain times of the day?

Are you on fiber (you get your own private glass strand) or cable (which you get to share with others in your immediate area who is on the same cable–this’ll suffer badly when the neighborhood kids come home from school and hop on line)

Malware?
Another possibility to consider is that your system is already compromised with malware and you’re part of a botnet, which could be hoovering up your bandwidth. You might check with your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to see usage by which URL. Some routers can log this for you.

Checkout Actual Ethernet Use Yourself
As long as you don’t do stuff like “Kill Process?” and answer “Yes”, this is risk free behavior.

You can also peek easily at overall bandwidth consumption via the “Task Manager”
On the “Taskbar” at the bottom of the screen, right click and select “Task Manager”

Once the task manager starts up, select “Performance” and “Ethernet”

You can get even more granular by launching the “Resource Monitor”
and poke around in there. Again, risk free behavior

If there’s something sucking up your bandwidth, you can Google that process and see if it might be nefarious or benign.

This is true and yet even in 2025, big names like Dell and HP are shipping laptops that are barely functional because of junky firmware. This was certainly my experience with my Dell that I bought 2 years ago, with lots of RAM and the very latest Intel CPU

Hey Matt, right you are… drivers are not updated, or sometimes the versions are bad, or it got returned and immediately sold without being fixed first.

The real test is whether or not a video off of their hard drive also stutters.

If plays cleanly, then it is most likely a problem in the pipeline. His screenshot shows a pretty fat pipeline. Those can be jiggered somewhat–though I’m on a whopping big 18Mbs download, 700K upload (don’t get jealous) and my videos are just fine at less than 1/20th his throughput.

If it does not play cleanly then, it could be multiple causes, drivers, firmware, faulty hardware. Support from where they bought it might be a good place to go (along with a a chunk of time to standby on hold and answer inane questions and perform tasks that probably will reveal what has already been told. That is a tough job being an entry level tech support folks, they have no choice–they must follow a script or they get sacked.)
