Iconic Irish band, Bagatelle had a hit locally with this in the early '80s. Today marks the last running of the 46A bus which is mentioned in the song so I thought I’d pay homage to Irelands favourite bus. Apologies to any purests.
The Emigrant’s Anthem!
“When my hummin’ was smothered by a 46A and the scream of a low flying jet.
So I jumped on a bus to Dun Laoghaire…”
I lived in Dun Laoghaire for my college years, and it was either the DART or the 46A (which admittedly did go all around the world…)
Here’s a visual representation of Dublin during those years for anyone interested. All familiar (apart from the GAA )
On a more practical level, I’m getting the ferry to Dublin next Thursday and was planning on getting the 46A to my in-laws in Foxrock. What bus do I get now?
Oh yeah, I nearly forgot to mention-
Lovely performance, Dom!
I agree, a beautiful performance Dom! It suits the song very well and it remembers me of the couple of months I spent in Dublin during the 90s.
@brianlarsen According to RTÉ you need to take the E7 bus from December 8th onwards
They only cancelled it when they heard you were coming Brian. It does seem like I was hasty. You will be one last ride on her (so to speak).
Thank you Franz
Great stuff Dom. Always loved that song and still find myself every now and then searching YouTube for it and watching / listening again. Brings back some great memories of growing up in Ireland during the 80’s. Brilliant version Dom and good to see you back around here.
Wasn’t really away Eddie. Popping in regularly. Lost a big of confidence in my learning and direction so I’m standing at a crossroads for a few months. It’s not a big problem. I’m ok standing here. It’s not causing massive distress. The answer will come in time.
I remember that summer in Dublin, too when it was still quite exotic to have songs with local references on the airwaves. Lovely version
