I haven’t posted an AVOYP for a while so here we go!
This is a great John Prine song, simple but very catchy and once it gets into your head difficult to get it out ![]()
I’ve just used some simple picking which I think suits the song

Good to see you again Richard, bringing along some more of your relaxed finger picking and singing for us to enjoy.

Well thank you Richard, helped by your tuition!
This is a beautiful song, and very nicely rendered, too.
yes, another John Prine cover ![]()
Lovely relaxed playing and singing Richard as always!!!
That’s a pretty song, Richard. You did a very nice job of it. A sad story behind the original though. (I went and listened to the John Prine Official Video). But to you, I say well done!
Hi Richard
That is one of my favourite songs, you do a lovely version.
That was just beautiful Richard, lovely picking and singing. Most enjoyable listen and another new one for me, will check it out thanks to your rendition! ![]()
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks all for listening and glad you liked my rendition.
I only watched the official video after the pointer! I realised it is bitter sweet tinged with melancholy, but hadn’t known of the reason why John Prine wrote it. I do seem to be attracted to songs with rather darker undertones!
Richard
Thanks for listening and glad you enjoyed it
I do like John Prine so thank you for sharing Richard. Well played and sung.
Great song Richard. You played this very well
This is just beautiful Richard! So soft and relaxed…I enjoyed it really a lot ![]()
Hi Richard
I really liked your playing of this song- not heard it before
Where is the best place to learn the chords picking etc. ?
thanks
Anth
Hi Anth and welcome to the forum and delighted you enjoyed my song!
The chords are straightforward https://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/tab/john-prine/summers-end-chords-2510901
I don’t knowingly use a particular picking pattern for this. I must have a few patterns in my head as I do learn the patterns for some songs but with this I did it more by feel and what sounded good to me. I like to try and minimise movements with my fretting hand sometimes and in this case thought the F played on strings 2.3.4. sliding down to a G sounded nice.
So have a go!
Richard
,
Glad you enjoyed my interpretation of John Prine’s song. They are always full of meaning, although the meaning is not always immediately apparent!
Thanks Richard.
It’s inspired me to learn this song - l am quite new to playing a song any song but love the lyrics and vibe of this one
Cheers
