I’m still playing around with this a bit myself. As a new player I’ve taken to the advice of using a thinner pic for strumming, which seems to be generally good advice. Currently using a Dunlop nylon .46mm. I still don’t love it, but it’s better than the others I’ve tried. Didn’t realize till reading above nylon is more flexible material than some of the others I may try a tortex Of the same thickness… Ironically, the music store has all kinds of pics and they’re all way thicker they usually start at .60 and go up from there. I’ll have to buy online I think.
I agree with Paul. If you are using this and not getting tangled up and like the tone and dynamics it produces. good. If it sounds good it is good and if it feels good even better.
Despite starting with an entry level tortex .50 when rocking up here many moons ago, I followed the advice of dropping to a nylon .46 and my strumming sounded like a playing card pegged to the back wheel of a bicycle (you’d have to be a certain age) but flappy as heck and not very nice. So I started moving up in thickness and down in size. So I’ll use a thickish JazIII for rhythm and melody/lead and am more than happy with the thicker pick. But for just rhythm I’ll use a Dunlop Max Grip blue that is 1.5 mm.
But. . . . . my current go to is an Ibanez Rubber grip Extra Heavy that I think is around 1.2 or 1.3. Again it is great for most disciplines.
Guess what I am saying it is horses for courses, so just find what works and feels right for you. Only you will know about the feel but post some recordings and we’ll let you know about the sound and dynamics ![]()
Like ‘a playing card pegged to the back wheel of your bike’…
Yes, I am of a certain age! ![]()
Because the Big Sturdy has ver round edges and does not flex, it gives a warm sound (imho) and never gets stuck.
Also it has a little dent (hollow part?) on both sides. Making it easy to hold and to not slip from your fingers.
I think I will have a go with the Maxgrip Blue and the Ibanez as well.
Thanks for the feedback!
