The Other Jolene

My cover of Jolene by Ray LaMontagne.
I find this guy hard to follow, both guitar & vocals, very unique strumming & phrasing. I just did my own thing

Wow AlyKat that was great. I freaking loved your song. The vocals and the great guitar.

First the guitar. That was really great. nice chord changes, and the quick one strum changes were super smooth. I have been working on my dynamics on my strumming and I really appreciated how well you played that.
You did great with you vocals. I absolutely loved your vocalization. Great stuff. I hope to see more of your stuff. I have never heard thay song before but the lyrics were really great.

Nice one, Ali!
I love Ray - was listening to his Monovision album… my favorite track on that album is Highway to the Sun - just a few minutes before hearing your Jolene! Gotta say that you really captured & conveyed the vibe… beautiful rendition full of feeling with lovely guitar & outstanding vocals! It’s a difficult song IMHO, but you really did it justice! Well done!!! Thanks for sharing! :clap:t2::grin:

This was great Ali! Smooth strumming and great singing, and together as Tod said that captured the vibe of the song perfectly. Who cares it doesn’t sound like the record when your version sounds sooo good!
And I totally agree, Ray is so hard to cover. I’ve said it somewhere before on this forum, his Trouble album was a key motivation for me to pick up guitar because “I want to make music like that dadida …” and here I am 18 year or so later and I still can’t play a single one of his songs. So hats off to you

I’ll check out that song. I’m new to Ray Montagne, but I really like him.

It is a simple song but complex at the same time. Thank you for listening & the kind words!

Thank you David.

The mix is still not great, I might try to fine tune some things again today. My ears got burned out working on it last night & I just threw up my hands & said GOOD ENOUGH!

Oh I bet you could play one! I simplified it greatly.
I do like the song Trouble, we should try it together
Thank you for the thoughtful comments.

BTW how do I reply to all with one post?

I went back to the mix with fresh ears.
I eliminated everything I had done to the guitar, lol.
A little reverb on the vocals.
Sounds better to me.
I guess I should just leave stuff alone!

Here the new mix:

The first version is very impressive already; the changes applied made it even better. Great guitar sound and, most of all, your voice. A superb piece of music, Allison :+1:

Being a complete n00b in this genre, i can surely say that i was blown away.
This is worth playing on the radio, afaik.

If you told me that this was a song, written and performed by some well know artist in the genre, i’d be totally convinced.

Awesome job. Really… amazing…

Side note: for me, the first recording is better than the second. For my taste, the second recording has too many “bells and whistles” added that don’t do the song justice.
The first recording is perfect, afaik.

Superb! I didn’t know the song and the artist, but I like your version a lot. Really outstanding vocals - sounds great and fits the song perfectly.
I think I slightly prefer your first mix, but both are good.

Wow that’s great!

what a voice!
and a excellent taste

Ray Lamontagne is magnificent, I based my version of “Crazy” on his version.
His version still gives me goosebumps!

Thank you so much, GrytPipe!

I have been working on my mixing skills with the help of a couple of people, one from this forum.
The first recording had bells & whistles applied to the guitar & a little reverb on the vocals.
The second recording I took everything off the guitar, just a bare bones dry track & left the vocals with just that bit of reverb. What people like is such a subjective thing. My goal currently is just to make sure all tracks are heard equally.

Thank you for listening!

I can find any of your recordings, do you have a link for me or can you steer me in the right direction?
