The Shadows: Atlantis

Recently a user posted a question regarding availability of The Shadows’ songs backing tracks. That reminded me that I had long planned to record my favourite hit, namely “Atlantis”. Well, here it is (my own BT, as well):

It certainly isn’t perfect; at this opportunity I learned a painful lesson that playing and recording a specific tune is a lot harder (at least for me) than improvising over a chord progression made up by myself…

So cool to hear a Shadows record on this forum. They played a great part in adding to my musical memories. And such a good job you’ve done.

What an enjoyable listen, Tomasz. I’m not familiar with the song, but you played it beautifully.

So I learned from a quick research that this group, The Shadows, were an Instrumental band in the pre- Beatles era. Active until 2020, or maybe still active? That was the latest date I found. Anyway, enjoyed your song. Looking forward to more.

@Willsie @pkboo3 : Thanks so much! Your kind words are truly appreciated. Being completely honest, I must say I’m not 100% satisfied with the recording. I like the sound, but, since I recorded the song in parts, the ‘seams’ at the merge points are pretty obvious…
For those interested-I preserved the original key of F major, the amp/cab modelling comes (as usual) from my Hotone Ampero Mini processor and the delay and mod effects-from a Line6 HX One.

That was an enjoyable listen, Tomasz!

I liked the atmospheric vibe and the tone of the lead guitar a lot. Great to hear some tunes from The Shadows here. Even though far before I was even born, I always enjoyed their music when it was played on the radio stations.

It’s such a shame The Shadows don’t seem to be known too well on the American continent. Hank Marvin the lead guitarist inspired some noteable British Greats including:
Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Peter Frampton, George Harrison, Brian May, Pete Townsend, David Gilmour and Mark Knopfler.

Mark Knopfler reportedly hounded his Dad for a fiesta red Fender Strat just like Hank Marvin’s… but his family was too poor for one so he got a “knock-off” without any amp. He plugged the guitar into an old radio so he could learn to play like Hank & blew up his family’s radio!!!

Nicely played Tomasz, good to hear the Shadows being covered.
Hank Marvin has been a huge influence to many great players, and it’s good to see his music still being played.
Well done and thank you for posting…:+1:t2:

@roger_holland @DavidP : I’m sooo glad you like it! It took me quite some time to play and record it, and still I’m not totally happy with it. Nonetheless it’s always a nice feeling when one’s work is appreciated. Thank you so, so much!
Many thanks to all who posted in this topic. You guys are great!

As a Shadows fan (1955 vintage) that sounded good I am learning Apache, wonderful land, peace pipe, and dance on, I have found some good backing tracks unable to download them but have bookmarked them. Just need more practice It was hearing Apache that made me want a guitar which I got aged about 10/11 unfortunately it took till now to get into learning it properly

That was terrific Tomasz. You absolutely nailed Hank’s and the Shadows tone on that one. Your backing track was so realistic too. Well done.

Apparently it was Cliff Richard who bought Hank the red Strat.
